He was captured and held at a concentration camp In France and later In Dachau, Germany, where he was Ireed by U.S. troops In 1945. In the 1970s, he became a spokesman tor Dutch resistance fighters who opposed moves to pardon two German war criminals responsible for deporting more than 100,000 Dutch Jews.

Helen Davis Pepperdine, whose late husband founded Pepperdine University, died Friday of heart failure at age 87 In Los Angeles. A native of Muncie, she moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1919 and worked as a photographer. She married George Pepperdine In 1934. Soon after, the couple founded the Helen Louise Girls Home, which catered to young women from broken homes. In 1937, Pepperdine opened the George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, which expanded into the private, liberal arts university that now sits atop a hill in Malibu overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Although her husband died in 1962, Mrs. Pepperdine remained active at the university and served as a Board of Regents member until her death. Beechner, Mabel S. COCOHTON: October 6. 1990.

Scott Mathoson, the former governor of Utah, died yesterday of cancer. He was 61. The 12th governor of the state, he served from 1977 to 1985, choosing not to seek re-election despite consistent favorable ratings In the polls. As governor, he successfully opposed placement of the MX missile system In the state's western desert, battled to continue funding of the massive Central Utah water control project and was given high marks for decisive action when parts of the state were devastated by flooding in 1983. Sheikh Rashid bin Said al-Maktoum, the ruler of the Persian Gulf state of Dubai, has died at age 76.

He was the vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a member. Dubai is the UAE's second largest oil producer after Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Rashid will be buried this morning, Dubai television said. Johan Tsengs Gerritsen, a well-known Dutch resistance fighter during World War II, died in a car crash yesterday In the Netherlands at age 82, Dutch television reported. He many; several nephews.
