TTT 60 DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. ROCHESTER, N.Y.. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY '1, 1991 Tie a yellow ribbon 'round this tradition information director. Metro-Act aired the program on the city's community access channel 12 on Jan. 24 and 26, said Leslie Maloy, Greater Rochester Cablevision's public relations coordinator.

The four shows, compiled from a network of cable access and independent producers around the country, were barely publicized. It wasn't "splendid television" but it was more than street theater. There were reports on oil, arms, politics, and grass-roots organizing, with commentaries from distinguished VS. activists, including disabled veteran Ron Kovic, former VS. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Daniel EUsberg and others.

Perhaps more impressive is that the two-hour block was "presented" transmitted on the PBS' internal system by Philadelphia public TV station WYBE and accepted for review by more than 60 PBS affiliates. The project its logo is a TV showing the universal "NO" circle and diagonal slash superimposed on an army tank began in August after Iraq invaded Kuwait and President Bush sent U.S. troops to Saudi Arabia. It is a venture of Paper Tiger Television, a New York City production group, and the Deep Dish TV Satellite Network, which has distributed programs to community access stations and cable systems since 1986. TV technology had made it possible for local, public access producers, using Hi-8 and Super VHS video cameras to create virtually broadcast-quality pictures and sound at about a tenth of the cost of conventional TV.

Dissenters get message through via satellite TV By Scott Williamt The Associated Press NEW YORK The satellites and information technology so vital to the TV networks' coverage of war with Iraq have become just as indispensable in mobilizing the voices and images of UJS. dissent "Fifty years ago, print was the medium of protest," said Marty Lucas, producer of the Gulf Crisis TV Project "Nowadays you really need to have a TV camera to participate in the debate." As the Jan. 15 deadline approached for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait the project broadcast two hours of programs for peace town meetings, speeches, panel talks, protest songs and demonstrations against U.S. intervention. So far, the Gulf Crisis TV Project has aired on 26 Public Broadcasting Service stations and more than 300 cable television stations.

"I would be very surprised if less than 1 million people had seen it" Lucas said. That's a conservative guess. PBS affiliates that aired the show included New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Seattle, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, Evansville, Lubbock, Texas, and Charleston, EL WXXI-TV, Channel 21, does not know of the program and hasnt aired it said Elizabeth M. Teall, the station's public By Marilyn Lary San Bernardino Sun The US. Army's Seventh Cavalry, the military unit that fought the Sioux and the Cheyenne at the Little Bighorn in 1876, is remembered every day all over the nation.

But most of us don't realize it "The Yellowlegs" nicknamed for the yellow stripe on their uniform pants are commemorated every time someone ties a yellow ribbon around a tree to honor U.S. troops. The tradition got its start when wives and sweethearts of the cavalry troopers began wearing yellow ribbons on their dresses, in their hair and around their necks to proclaim their loyalty to and pride in their mea More than a century later, yellow ribbons continue to remind the people on the home front of the men and women serving overseas. Musicologist Edward Dolph traces the custom and a 1917 song called Around Her Neck She Wore a Yellow Ribbon directly to the yellow ribbons worn by Seventh Cavalry wives in the 1870s. "Around her neck she wore a yellow ribbon, "She wore it in the winter and the merry month of May, "When they asked her why the hell she wore it "She said twas for her lover who was far, far away.

"That's the first musical reference to the custom I could find. It was in a book on music history by Sigmund Spaeth, who made the connection to the modern song," Cohen says. In the next 40 years or so, the English folk song became a VS. folk song and acquired Seventh Cavalry links. "It was obviously an American folk song when some fellow called George A.

Norton picked up on it in 1917, copyrighted and published it" Cohen says. In 1949, movie director John Ford filmed She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, star John Wayne. It featured the World War I song and planted the music and words firmly in the consciousness of the United States. In 1951, during the Korean War, the Andrews Sisters recorded their version of the song, which sold a million copies. In 1973, Tony Orlando and Dawn recorded an entirely different yellow ribbon song about a man returning home from prison.

The words and music, by Irvin Levine and Russell Brown, differed from the old English and earlier VS. versions, but the yellow ribbon theme remained. "Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree, "It's been three long years, do ya still want me?" That song, also recorded by several other artists over the years, was still being played in 1979, when Iran took VS. citizens hostage. "She wore it for her lover who was far, far away, "Far away, Far away.

"She wore it for her lover who was far, far away." In his book Sound-Off, a collection of military songs and customs, Dolph says the tradition arose in the post-Civil Wax period. The custom, dormant for about a century, reappeared in 1979, when American hostages were taken in Iran. It was spurred by the 1973 hit Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn, which in turn was influenced by the yellow ribbon song from World War The custom of wearing a ribbon or leafy garland to honor a sweetheart is recorded as long ago as the Middle Ages, when knights wore their ladies' colors in ribbons or scarves on their sleeves. By 1838, an old English folk song recounting the custom was well known, says Norm Cohen of Venice, a folk music historian. "All round my hat I wears a green willow, "All round my hat for twelvemonths and a day "If anyone should ask the reason why I wears it "Tell them that my true love is fax, far away." So sang the English maiden who twined a leafy branch onto her hat to re-member her sweetheart FREE RERUNS 3 Lines, 7 Days: $7 OVER HALF A MILLION POTENTIAL BUYERS EVERY For as little as $7 order a Guaranteed Want Ad to sell an Hem priced up to $500.
