OB DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. ROCHESTER. THURSDAY. APRIL 24. 1986 Irish officials shift Maloney to tougher jail By John O'Brwn Damociat ana Ovorwcie Joseph M.

Maloney, a suspect in the poisoning death of his wife in Rochester 19 years ago, has been transferred to a top-security Irish Prison that holds only terrorists in the Irish Republican Army. Maloney, fighting extradition to the United States, was taken under heavy guard to Portlaoise Door slammed prison after his second unsuccessful escape attmpt April 14 from Dublin's Mountjoy prison. Maloney, 50, is believed to be the only non-terrorist prisoner at Portalaoise prison. The prison, 50 miles from Dublin, holds 350 IRA terrorists, according to Irish authorities. Maloney is being held separate from the convicted IRA terrorists and is under guard 24 hours a day, authorities said.

Prosecutors in Rochester have been concerned about the possibility that Maloney might escape while he's being held in Ireland. Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Wendy Lehmann, who is handling Maloney's case here, said she would feel better knowing that Maloney is in a high-security prision. But she said Irish authorities had not notified her that Maloney had been transferred. Maloney was caught trying to escape with another prisoner April 14 from Mountjoy prison, using a roughly constructed rope ladder. After that escape attempt, three prison guards were suspended, Irish authorities said.

Irish prison officials moved Maloney to a maximum-security cell in June after they uncovered a suspected jailbreak that might have involved a $50,000 bribe to a guard to smuggle in explosives, prison sources said. Maloney escaped from the former Rochester State Hospital in 1967 by duplicating a key. He was being held there for examinations after he was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, June Fisk Maloney. Maloney is accused of poisoning his wife with wood-grain alcohol at a birthday party for their 5-year-old son. After escaping from the hospital, he fled to Ireland and lived under the name of Michael 0Shea until his arrest Jan.

7, 1985, after the signing of a new extradition treaty between Ireland and the United States. That extradition treaty is being challenged in the Irish courts, and is holding up Maloney's transfer here for trial on the murder charges. Patrick Clancy of the Ireland International News Agency in Dublin contributed to this story. Chateau Liberte on sale June 1 places the temporary moniker given the wine by the Cellier Vin-ecole du Blayais, the largest white wine grape-growing cooperative in the French region of Bordeaux. The somewhat mischievious temporary name created by Farkas was Chateau Quel-que Chose.

Although Farkas was unwilling to use the word, the French hope to sell their wine to young urban professionals sometimes called yuppies. He said the co-op believes the new wine's hint of fruit will be a hit with this group, because it will make the wine an excellent aperitif or a good match with food. "Really fruity wines are for little old ladies," Farkas said.

Brown said that until 1984, the commissioners who used the Commission House periodically made donations into a private fund used for the cabin's upkeep. Since 1984, he said, commissioners have paid full price to use the building.

The cabin, which has been renamed the Genesee Con- ference Center, also is used for commission meetings, training sessions for regional park personnel and by members of the public who are aware of the building's existence, he The money generated by the cabin's rentals now goes into a state fund used for maintaining park structures, Brown said. Members of the public have always used the building on a limited basis, but the commission has not advertised the cabin because it "can't stand heavier use. "What are you going to do force that marina to go to bankruptcy court and go out of business?" asked resident Chris DiDio. But board member Chuck Loucks replied that the village must make parking and docking manageable and not allow new docks. "All you are worried about is bring the green in.

They're adding to the problem, but as long as they're bringing in the money we look the other way," he said. "How about people who live here permanently and don't have a place to turn around now." The village has the problem because it is very popular but also very small. Space for parking isn't easy to come by, said another board member, Bill Huff Jr. "We've gone around this village and looked at everything we could to come up with parking," Huff said. Some parking relief is on the way.

The village will begin work in September on a lot next to the village baseball diamond that could hold at least 40 cars. Sodus Point Mayor Roger jSnyder said that under the proposal, marina owners would be responsible for coming up with parking spaces themselves.
