Third base coach John Goryl, who doubled as the infield instructor, moved to the minor-league department. "You look at Hank and Tom as being people I've worked with," Hart said. "I look at people that have known me from having managed somewhere down the line. They recognize my ability." Hart, 40, decided not to return to the Dominican League, where he managed Estrellas for the last two winters. "I've been away long enough," he said.

"Some people would say it's burnout. That's not the case. I need a little break. There's nothing to prove by going back down there." He still wants to manage in the major leagues, but that prospect is dim for 1989, after what the Orioles did this season. "I was there," Hart said.

Fans approve of Classic The fans have spoken. More showed up for fewer dates in the International League playoffs this season, which decided the pennant, than in 1987, when the playoffs decided only the Governors' Cup champion. In the American Association, the average attendance per night increased over 1987, according to IL administrator Randy Mobley. Deeming the plan a success, the Triple-A Alliance is expected to approach the major league executive council with a request to continue the Classic for three years and ask permission to pursue a television contract. The major leagues approved the Classic for 1988, with the provision that it not be televised. The Alliance needed permission for WUHF to televise Game Six. The IL announced a realign ment of its divisions last week at the Triple-A meetings in Las Vegas, Nev.

Rochester, Syracuse, Scranton and Pawtucket will comprise one division. Tidewater, Richmond, Columbus and Toledo will make up the other. If Scran-ton's ballpark is not ready by opening day (April 5) the Red Barons will play in Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Alliance also revamped the interleague scheduled for 1989. In a move to reduce the two-day series, which were the major complaint about the increased travel, teams are likely to play three three-game series and a two-game series per trip or homestand, Mob-ley said.

That will increase the schedule to 146 games. Teams will still play 18 games against their COVERALL against teams in the other division in their league. Half the interleague schedule will begin in May, but then teams will return to their own league until the All-Star game. The second half of the interleague schedule will run from after to all-star break until mid-August Pawtucket General Manager Mike Tamburro was named the International League's executive of the year. The PawSox set a record for attendance and wrested money from the city for renovations to McCoy Stadium.

Miscellaneous stats: Rochester led the IL with players on rehabilitation assignment (five) and was third behind Columbus and Maine with players sent to the big leagues (17). The American Association was 187-131 against the IL, and Buffalo was the only AA team below .500 in interleague play (19-21). Extra bases The night of his surgery to transplant a ligament from his right ankle to his left elbow, Eric Bell said he began rehabilitating his pitching arm by squeezing a rubber ball. More than one month after the surgery, Bell said he uses his left arm, "like normal. I don't see how it will take a year, but I guess it does." Some of his great Democrat and Chronicle The season began with a record 2l-game losing streak and as hard as John Hart and the Baltimore Orioles tried, it never really improved.

"From early June through early September, we began to approach the corner," said Hart, concluding his first major-league season as the Orioles third base coach. "From early September to now, we got to the corner, turned around and went the other way." The Orioles set a franchise record for losses, breaking the mark of 100 set in 1954, their first year in Baltimore. While Manager Frank Robinson, who took over from Cal Ripken Sr. after six games, will start fresh next spring, there are no assurances who will start with him. "They hired me to be the third base coach this year," said Hart, who compiled a 436-334 record in six years as a manager in the Orioles farm system.

He guided the Rochester Red Wings to the International League playoffs in 1986, when he was manager of the year, and in '87. "They don't owe me anything beyond that." But he said he'd try to get some indication from the Orioles before his off-season begins tomorrow. "I have no control over it," he said of his future. "I'd hate to be put in as a scapegoat In all fairness, Frank should have the option of hiring his own staff I realize anything can happen. I feel they'll let some people go, or they would have announced they're all coming back." Despite the uncertainty of his position, Hart has not been job-hunting "I don't want to be disloyal," he said.

"If someone were to hire me under those circumstances, they'd think I might do the same thing to them." Whether it be the Orioles or another team.
