PAGE A10 PHAROS-TRIBUNE SCHOOLS MAY 13,1990 Bulletin Board From Pharos-Tribune School Correspondents Columbia Middle School: Accelerated Math Classes In Math-A-Thon By BRANDIE REID Columbia Middle School The accelerated math classes of Columbia Middle School participated in the St Jude's Children's Cancer Research Math-a-Thon. They collected S808.77. Mike Fritzman came in first with SI32, and Nick Burkhardt was second with $100. All together, 67 students took pan in the Math-a-Thon. On Tuesday, the school will have Steve Knight, an offensive lineman for the Indianapolis Colts, present a program about motivation and staying in school.

School Briefs Compiled from Pharos-Tribune staff reports 2 Awarded Scholarships To Valparaiso Laura Esther Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Phillips, Rochester, and Tracy J. Weese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Douglas Weese, Logansport, have been awarded Indiana State Scholarships to Valparaiso University, where they will be enrolled in the college of arts and sciences. Phillips is a senior at Caston High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, FHA, Spanish Club and swing choir. She was selected the top junior English and history student, and has served as president of Key Club and secretary-treasurer of the choir. She is a member of Twelve Mile United Methodist Church. Weese is salutatorian of the 1990 graduating class at Pioneer High School.

She is a member of the French National Honor Society and was chosen for the past four years as member of the Midwest Conference Math Team. She was a homecoming queen finalist and was Sweetheart's Ball queen. She played volleyball, basketball and summer softball and was a member of the band, marching band, French club, Sunshine Society and academic super bowl team. She is a member of Webb Chapel United Methodist Church. Caston FHA Honors Ideal Persons Caston High School Future Homemakers of America held their annual Ideal Persons Night on May 9 in the Caston cafetorium.

All year, members have been buying special gifts for their Ideal Persons' birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries, and on Wednesday, those people found out who considers them an ideal person. Following a buffet meal, guests were entertained by Natalie Rentschler, Sarah Muinzer, Brian Wiese and Stan Storey, Caston's music director, who gave various musical presentations. The evening concluded with a fashion show presented by members, modeling clothing from the Class Act and Plotner's Shoe Tree in Logansport, the and store in Rochester, and Mary's Stitch and Knit in Fulton. North Miami FFA Team Third In Contest An FFA team from North Miami High School placed third in the 1990 Hoard's Dairyman cow judging contest. The 60th annual competition was held at Fort Atkinson, and had 64,112 contestants from 49 states and 47 countries.

In the high school division, which included the North Miami team, there were 1,077 entries from 46 states and Pioneer 2nd In MWC Writing Competition Pioneer students won second place in the Midwest Conference Writing Contest, a competition involving nine area high schools. Freshmen and sophomores competed in one division and juniors and seniors made up the upper division. Both divisions compete in the categories of short story, exposition and poetry. Placings were: Short story Senior division, Steve Barber, first place, and Adam Charles, fourth place; junior division, Kristie Roller, second, Jeff Funk, third, and Missy Hennings, sixth. Contestants will receive prizes from the English department on awards night, at 7 p.m. May 23 in the high school auditorium. Lafayette Catholic High School To Close At End Of School Term LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Central Catholic High School, which has had declining enrollment, will close at the end of the school term, Bishop William Higi said Friday. The closing affects just grades 912 while the junior high portion of the school will remain in operation, Higi said. Higi, who heads the Lafayette diocese, linked the closing to declines in enrollment and funding. He said at a news conference that enrollment at the Lafayette school had dropped from more than 400 students in 1970 to less than 200 students projected to attend this fall.

"It is a very emotional and devastating moment," he said. "We made every effort to forego this." The school will close after the school year ends on June 1, officials said.
