State officials and tribal elders have agreed the park could not be opened as scheduled this summer because work is incomplete on the 300-acre site in Ontario County, said Andrew Mazzella, regional director of the Finger Lakes State Parks. "At this point, we realized that an opening would be inappropriate because we just couldn't give the kind of effort the site deserves," Mazzella said yesterday.

"And besides, Peter Jemison, the park manager, has reminded us that next year is the tricentennial anniversary of the Denonville campaign." The village was destroyed on July 13, 1687, by troops lead by the Marquis de Denonville, a former governor of Canada. In the 1600s, the site was the largest Indian community in the Northeast, built on the teachings of Hiawatha, the Huron peacemaker. All state literature referring to the site has been changed to refer to Ganonhdagan, the new name that was agreed on earlier this year after it was suggested by Tonawanda Seneca Chief Corbett Sundown, Mazzella said. Jemison said during an interview last February that he and other Native Americans wanted to change the name of the Seneca site because Gannagaro is a Mohawk word of undetermined meaning and origin.
