David Bergland and Jim Lewis 1,057 Votes Looking for a New Year's resolution you will be proud to make and to keep? Look no farther than our magnificent Statue of Liberty.

Miss Liberty needs your help. Nearly 100 years of exposure to salt air, pollutants and weather have seriously damaged one of our most treasured national symbols. More than a century ago it took the pennies and dimes of millions of school children and immigrants to build her a pedestal in New York Harbor. Americans responded then and they are responding now. The $230 million needed to restore Lady Liberty and Ellis Island is being raised entirely from private donations.

People like you and me from all across America and beyond. The Gannett Rochester Newspapers are proud to serve as a community clearinghouse for this campaign. Every donation sent to us is forwarded, with the donor's name, to the Restoration Fund. In addition, we are pleased to salute in periodic reports in the Sunday Democrat and Chronicle the names of those who donate or in whose honor donations are made. Enthusiastic support has come from schools like Scribner Road in Penfield where students just concluded a drive that produced Mrs.

Hoagland's second graders at South Seneca Central School in Interlaken donated $150! Students at the Ontario Primary and Elementary Schools ran marathon races or solved structured problems as teams to raise money. At Wolcott Street Elementary School in LeRoy students created a display and presented their donations to us in impressive ceremonies in the village park which contains a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Every penny counts and we thank all who have responded. Much more is needed before the July 4, 1986 deadline. Won't you please start 1985 by helping restore your Statue of Liberty? wew inance.
