SUNDAY DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE, ROCHESTER, N.Y., FEBRUARY 17, 1985 DC McEnroa buys Carson home Tennis star pays $1 million to $3 million for property near Malibu By Ruth Ryon Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES Tennis star John McEnroe has bought Johnny Carson's house at Carbon Beach near Malibu. The television talk-show host bought the modem wood and glass home for $8.6 million last fall, and McEnroe paid more than $1 million but less than $3 million, said Brooks Barton, vice president and western regional director of Previews Inc. Barton was not involved in the sale but is handling the listing of Carson's $4 million condo in the year-old Trump Towers residential-retail complex on New York's 5th Avenue.

McEnroe's new house is only about half the size of Carson's pad further west at Point Dume, and it is older, though its Cape Cod style was remodeled to conform more to Carson's contemporary taste. Carson, also an avid tennis play-er, now works out in his mirror-walled gym. At the push of a button, a mirrored panel in the room becomes a window to admit fresh air and ocean sounds. McEnroe's house is on the beachfront Carson's is on a bluff overlooking the water. Neither has a tennis court.

What a bargain! It is no secret in real estate that frequently more can be bought for less overseas, but a estate for Could be a bargain if traveling to northern Scotland is no concern. David H. Gold, a London businessman, has announced that he is selling his House of the Northern Gate, "the most northerly estate on the Scottish mainland," on the Dunnet Head Peninsula. "I bought it in 1970 as a fun place to go to fish and shoot," he said. There are grouse, duck, snipe, rabbit, hare, trout and salmon on the property, which in-.

eludes miles of North Sea frontage; an 11 -bedroom, sandstone house built in 1911; and rolling moorland and grazing fields interspersed with lakes. Lest it sound too remote, Gold points out that Dunrobin Castle, historic seat of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland, and Castle Mey, the north Scottish home of the Queen Mother, are nearby, and there is daily air service to the south from Wick, 20 miles away. Trott Funeral Horney. it. If there is a good view or an attractive window, these will be decorated so one's eye registers the special feature. When the room has no special attributes, decorators create them, perhaps with dramatic lighting or by painting, papering or paneling one wall, or by installing architectural detailing such as double moldings on a wall, then placing a picture inside the moldings. The major selling points in model homes often are not the basic plan, but the accessories that personalize the house.

That's why Trupp's firm, Color Design Art, always creates an imaginary family with names, hobbies and interests before choosing the decorations. She suggests individuals can make their own homes more interesting by choosing accessories that reflect basic interests and hobbies. In children's rooms, a budding ballerina can be treated to framed dance posters on the walls, a sports enthusiast to wallpaper with a sporting theme. In small open-plan homes, decorators generally use the same basic color scheme throughout Vibrant colors may be used on a single wall in a few of the rooms, but an overall color makes the home seem more spacious than it actually is. 30. He said the match proved that the shroud was used to bury a crucified Jew in Palestine around that time, making it a mathematical probability that it was used by Jesus. Some scientists who have studied the shroud, kept at Turin, Italy, say it is a fake, created by artisans much later. Filas also was an expert on the Roman Catholic theology of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, and wrote seven of his 10 books on the subject.

Writer Marian Engel, 51, honored in native Canada Associated Press TORONTO Writer Marian Engel, known for her thoughtful and esoteric contributions to Canadian literature, died yesterday in Toronto General Hospital after a long battle with cancer, a family friend said. She was 51. Engel was a recipient of the Governor General's Award in 1976 for her novel Bear, the controversial erotic tale of a love affair between a woman and a bear. She produced 11 novels and books during her career plus numerous stories and articles for magazines and journals. Among the best known' novels are No Clouds of Glory, The Honey man Festival, The Glassy Sea and Lunatic Villas.

The first chairman of the Writer's Union of Canada in 1973-74, Engel was co-winner of a City of Toronto award in 1982 for Lunatic Villas. That novel, like many of her others, featured a woman protago- nist beset by the practical and spiritual problems of forging a viable female trail often alone in the 20th century. She was 55. Stuart had been working on a show about her sickness and the relationship between doctors and cancer patients.

Are You Listening featured groups of people ranging from prisoners to prison guards to widows discussing their experiences and problems. Beverly Trupp, whose Los Angeles firm decorates models in many areas of the country, says some people make it a habit by visiting the new models locally.

Builders are aware that much of the Sunday traffic consists of lookers, not buyers. But, she says, they also know that people fall in love with a house and before they know it, they become buyers, not lookers. In the meantime, one can garner excellent ideas on how to improve the present home, perhaps so that it can be disposed of and a new home can be bought One can learn how to place furniture in a room to create a more welcoming atmosphere and a better traffic pattern, how to make a dull room more interesting, and how to use color either to lend drama or to unify space, says Trupp. In a well-decorated model home, the visitor's attention is immediately drawn to a room's best feature. If there is a fireplace and this is an important selling point, furniture will be grouped around ODiTunniES 'Cheers'-actor eulogized in R.I.

Associated Press' PROVIDENCE, R.I. Actor Nicholas Colasanto, who played the lovable but simple-minded "Coach" on NBC TV's popular comedy series Cheers, was remembered at his funeral yesterday by a friend who said "we'll laugh a lot thinking about you." Colasanto, 61, died after suffering a heart attack at his Hollywood home Tuesday. More than 300 people attended the funeral at Holy Cross Church in Colasanto's native Rhode Island. Actor and longtime friend George Garro gave the eulogy. "You done good, Coach.

We'll miss you," he said. "It's not going to be the same, J)ut we'll laugh a lot thinking about you. "We don't have to go rummaging through the closet for 8 millimeter films," he said. "We've got Nick in living color on Cheers." After the hour-long service, Colasanto's body was taken to St Ann's cemetery in Cranston for burial. The only member of the Cheers cast at the funeral was John Rat-zenberger, who plays Cliff the mailman on the series.

Thursday's scheduled episode of Cheers featuring Colasanto was postponed so NBC could rebroad-cast an October 1982 episode that won him an Emmy nomination. Before the rebroadcast, co-star Ted Danson gave a short dedication to Colasanto, who will appear in one more pre-taped episode of the NBC-TV program, set to air March 14. "This encore episode of Cheers is dedicated with love and appreciation to the memory of Nick Colasanto," Danson said. Although producers have said they will not have another actor portray Coach on the program, they have not said how his death will be written into the story. Colasanto, a recovered alcoholic who stopped drinking more than eight years ago, was never mar- ried.
