4D SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2005 DemocratandChronicle.com DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE COLLEGE REPORT AREA MEN'S BASKETBALL Bonnies rebound from loss to beat St. Francis Texas rolling toward Roses -V Ur-Z I Mi I li h7 STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Ahmad Smith scored 21 points and Patrick Lottin added 20 Saturday night, leading host St. Bonaventure to a 69-65 victory over St. Francis, Pa. St.

Bonaventure (3-2) eclipsed its win total from last season, when the team went 2-26. Rashaan Benton led St. Francis (2-5) with 17 points. The Bonnies went on a 9-4 run to take a 58-52 lead in the second half. St.

Bonaventure opened a seven-point lead twice in the final minutes. Lottin hit a 10-foot baseline jumper from the right side with 3:33 to play to make it 66-59. Lot-tin's defensive rebound led to a fast-break layup by Smith, putting the Bonnies up 68-61 with 2:19 to go. The Red Flash was held to three field goals over the final five minutes. CARNEGIE MELLON 72, ROCHESTER 71 Senior forward Nate Maurer scored on a layup with 3.7 seconds to play to give visiting Carnegie Mellon the victory.

Maurer finished with a career-high 41 points. He scored 31 in the second half as the Tartans (1-0 University Athletic Association, 6-0) rallied from a 13-point deficit. After the go-ahead basket, Rochester's Joe Canty threw the ball to Tim Brackney just over midcourt. Brackney's shot struck the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded. Carnegie Mellon snapped a 23-game home-court UAA winning streak for Rochester.

The Yellowjackets were 7-0 at home in the UAA in each of the last three years. Rochester's last UAA home loss came on Feb. 3, 2003, to Washington EDDIE PELLS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON The quarterback pinned one behind his ear. The coach cradled an entire bouquet. The Texas Longhorns came out smelling like roses, with a resounding win that put them one victory away from the national title that has eluded the program for decades.

Led by four touchdowns from Vince Young, the second-ranked 'Horns put a Texas-sized thumping on Colorado, 70-3 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday. Next stop, the Rose Bowl, for the BCS title on Jan. 4 against top-ranked USC. "This bunch, all year, has controlled their own destiny, and they did the same today," coach Mack Brown said. After their thorough dismantling of the Buffs, the 'Horns (12-0) waited to see who their Rose Bowl opponent would be.

That was about their only suspense for the day. "USC has probably the second-best offense, compared to our offense, in the nation," safety Michael Huff said. "It will be a great matchup for us. We just have to line up and play Texas defense, and we'll be fine." With the game well in hand in the third quarter, some 'Horns fans clad in burnt orange could be seen sniffing yellow roses in the stands to celebrate. The Longhorns are going for their first undisputed national title since 1969, when Darrell Royal worked the sidelines.
