New RIT center to be forum for local industry Democrat ana Cfwomc Rochester Institute of Technology's new Center for Materials Science and Engineering will provide new opportunities for research and activities with local industry, college officials say. The center involves two colleges science and engineering and five departments physics, chemistry, microelectronic engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. It will be governed by RIT faculty and members of local industry. Among the center's objectives will be to bring together faculty from the RIT community with common interests in materials studies and research, according to OBITUARY C.R. Buchwald, ex-store owner SENECA FALLS Clarence R.

"Bucky" Buchwald who sold hardware for 30 years in downtown Seneca Falls, died Monday in Venice Hospital, Venice, Fla. He was 71. He operated Hadley's Hardware on Fall Street, retiring in 1976. From his post behind the counter near the rear of the long, narrow, old-fashioned store, he greeted customers in a hearty, booming voice and offered free pretzels and apples from containers that sat near the cash register. During his years in the hardware business begun by his wife's family, he prided himself on maintaining a large inventory of obscure and hard-to-find objects that included machine parts, plumbing supplies, tools and farm equipment Mr.

Buchwald was a Buffalo native and a 1937 graduate of Syra- Pointing way for city blacks FROM PAGE 1B She worked her way up, becoming the district's first black vice principal at School 19, principal at School 24, director of the district's Title I program, director of the district's school integration program and finally administrative director of the City School District's elementary schools. She retired from the latter position in -July. "I felt I had to work twice as hard. I am not a perfectionist, but I was always taught that I should go the extra mile," she said. A native of Wise, N.C., Young said she did not initially have an interest in teaching, although her mother, Lucy, was a 1906 graduate of Hampton Institute and taught school in Roanoke, Va.

Her father, John Amos Holloway, owned a farm there. The summer following her graduation in 1944 from Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., at age 19, made her realize what profession she wanted. Along with a group of missionaries, she had to establish a nursery school for migrant farm workers in Pooleville, N.Y., Madison County. While Young did have success with her career, she said she still could not have everything. She and her husband James, then an employee at Art-Optical wanted to buy a house in Rochester's 19th Ward, but could not because they were black.

"In 1957, 1 looked in the mirror and had my hard earned cash in my hand and asked, Alice Young, black American and good citizen, what's wrong?" Rochester banks would not give her a mortgage at the time, nor would real estate agents show her and her husband houses in the areas they wanted to live. Her only alternative was to give money to a white woman who was a friend to buy a house, a house she was not able to see beforehand. After buying the house at 99 Millbank she and her husband knew they could not let the mostly white neighbors see them immediately move a lot of furniture inside. But Young and her husband thought that if they moved just the crib and a chair in at night, no one would notice. Someone did.

The next morning she found a note in her mailbox saying, among other things, 'You niggers have no right to buy this house' signed the Klu Klux Klan of Millbank Street. She and her husband lived in the house for 17 years. They now live in Brighton. Young was named one of six Women of the Year in Rochester in 1963 by the YWCA and the Rochester Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. She is chairwoman of the board of trustees of Monroe Community College, vice president of the board of directors of Frank Gannett Newspaper Carrier Scholarships and a member of St.
