Phil Jordan, a special agent in the Drug Enforcement Agency's Dallas office, said the cocaine was brought from South America on a Cessna 421 that landed at the Downtown Air Park Sunday night. George Crenshaw, 48, of Alta Loma, identified as the plane's pilot, and William Pickering, 67, of Upland, who allegedly met the plane when it arrived Sunday, were arrested when they returned to the plane Tuesday, authorities said. Art Institute Purchases Gacy Portrait CHICAGO (UPI) The Art Institute of Chicago defends its purchase of portraits of serial slayer John Wayne Gacy and two other murderers as part of its 20th century collection but has no immediate plans to display them. The portraits of Gacy, James "Cowboy" Autry, who was executed in Texas last year, and Gerald Eugene Stano, convicted Of eight murders, were purchased for $900 each from Chicago artist Linda Lee by the institute's curator for the Department of 20th Century Painting and Sculpture.

"The prints were acquired through a normal acquisition procedure relating to a curator's fund Institute Director James Wood said in a statement Tuesday. Election Loser Charged With Assault MANCHESTER, N.H. (UPI) It wasn't Dan Fletcher's night. He was trounced in his bid to win the Republican mayoral candidacy, then arrested for assaulting his mother and father, police said today. Fletcher, 33, was charged with assaulting Joseph, 69, and Bernice Fletcher, 61, in the younger Fletcher's Manchester home, police said.

Gag Order Imposed In 'Night Stalker' Case LOS ANGELES (UPI) judge in the "NightStalker" serial murder case has issued a gag order preventing lawyers, investigators and witnesses from talking to the press. Municipal Judge Elva Soper granted the order Tuesday at the request of the deputy public defender representing suspect Richard Ramirez, ruling that the "prejudicial and inflammatory" coverage of the case, "if continued, will make it difficult, if not impossible for this defendant to receive a fair trial." Violating the order could bring contempt of court citations and possible jail terms or fines. The prosecutors did not resist the request.

Ramirez, 25, charged with the murder of two men one each in Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as counts of attempted murder, rape, burglary and robbery, smiled as the order was issued. (UPI) Two fugitives who eluded a 300-member posse and a high- tech helicopter for three days were flushed from a mountain wilderness by a bloodhound named Brandy and were charged with murdering a state trooper. William Richard Bray and Jimmy Rios, both 23, had been chased through the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains near the North Carolina-Tennessee border since Saturday, when they allegedly killed rookie Trooper Bobby Coggins who had stopped them for driving a stolen pickup truck. Bray and Rios were charged with first-degree murder after their capture Tuesday afternoon and face an arraignment before Chief District Judge Bob Lacey in Marshall at 2 p.m. EOT, the same time Coggins, 27, is to be buried at nearby Bryson City. Brandy, a 90-pound rust- colored bloodhound, got much of the credit for capturing Bray and Rios, who escaped Aug.

26 from a jail in Ozark, and made their way south in a stolen truck they abandoned after Coggins was shot to death. The 2V 2 -year-old bloodhound owned by Burke County Sheriff's Detective Steve Graves got on the trail of the fugitives Tuesday morning, when they were seen running across a tobacco field near Doggett Mountain, a rugged wilderness area in the Pisgah National Forest. "I just didn't figure there was any man who could keep up in front of those dogs. They gave up. I seen them.

They just came walking down," said Walter Honeycutt of the Madison County Sheriff's Department. Graves said Brandy uncovered a rifle the fugitives had stolen and at one point led them up a rock cliff to a piece of clothing dropped by one of the fleeing suspects. Striking Teachers Sent To Jail, Fined United Press International Striking Pawtucket, R.I., teachers went to jail rather than obey a judge's order to return to work, while Washington state officials called for a resumption of talks in Seattle, site of the nation's largest teacher walkout. Teacher strikes in six states today affected nearly 102,000 students: 43,500 in Washington, 29,000 in Michigan, 18,000 in Pennsylvania, 8,500 in Rhode Island, 2,000 in Ohio and 600 in Illinois. Teachers in two districts ended walkouts Tuesday.

In Providence, R.I., the Pawtucket Teachers Alliance and 34 striking teachers faced contempt of court citations for ignoring a judge's back to work order. Superior Court Judge Corinne Grande, who ordered 23 teachers jailed and fined Tuesday, scheduled a hearing today on school district requests for the contempt citations. Cargo Plane Disappears NEW ORLEANS (UPI) Seven Coast Guard aircraft today searched a area for a cargo airplane carrying electronic parts that disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico. The pilot, Orville O'Brien of Costa Rica, was the only person on board the twin-engine Merlin, said Coast Guard spokesman Keith Spangler.

Two Coast Guard aircraft searched a area about 180 miles south of the Louisiana coast until dark Tuesday but reported no sign of the plane. The flight originated in Belize City, Belize, and was bound for New Orleans. Officials said the plane disappeared after making a stop at Merida, Mexico. The missing plane was leased from Duke Leasing Inc. of Dover, Spangler said.
