TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 2005 DemocratandChronicle.com DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE Brighton grad's fight with killer described PAUL PINKHAM THE (FLORIDA) TIMES JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Even as she bled to death, Brighton High School graduate Corey Parker waged a life-and-death struggle against whoever repeatedly stabbed her in her Jacksonville Beach apartment, the Duval County's chief medical examiner testified Monday as Parker's ex-neighbor's first-degree murder trial rolled into its second week. The popular waitress and student blocked one knife thrust with her knee and managed to grab the weapon, leaving a Chief deep. gash in her left hand, Medical Examiner Margarita Arruza testified. Cuts on her right hand showed defensive wounds there, too, Arruza said.

But the fatal wound already had been inflicted, severing two major arteries in her neck, Arruza said. Eventually, Parker, 25, lost consciousness and died. "When you die by bleeding, it's not an immediate death," Arruza testified. Parker, a 1991 Brighton High graduate, was stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen and face after she died, Arruza testified. In total, the former medical examiner who performed her autopsy counted 101 stab or slash wounds, Arruza said.

But she couldn't say whether more than one knife was used in the Nov. 27, 1998, slaying of Parker, who worked at Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic Beach. Police and prosecutors contend Parker's neighbor, Robert Erik Denney, then 17, killed her and acted alone. But he wasn't even a suspect until nearly two years after Parker's death, when a former co-worker came forward and told police about a frantic conversation she had with Denney in January 1999. Julia Sedgwick testified a hysterical Denney called her at 3:30 a.m.

and told her he needed her help. The two worked together at the old Barbecue LTD restaurant in Jacksonville Beach. "He was frantic, pacing, smoking cigarettes almost manic," Sedgwick told jurors. She said he told her about a family emergency in Texas and that he needed her help packing. Then a sudden calm came over him as he talked about a waitress in a neighboring apartment who he wanted to date, she said.

He pointed out an apartment Sedgwick figured out more than a year later belonged to Parker. That's when Sedgwick, her brother-in-law and a friend went to police, though she admitted mistakenly telling police the conversation took place the day after Parker's slaying. She also admitted the three decided to go to police after learning of a $20,000 reward posted by Parker's father for information leading to the conviction of whoever killed his daughter. "It's not about the money," she testified. It's about doing the right thing." Denney was arrested in November 2000 after police matched his DNA to several strands of hair and a smear of blood from Parker's apartment.

Other co-workers said Denney had been "fidgety" about the police search of his bedroom. Retired Jacksonville Beach police Detective Tommy Maxwell testified he spoke with Denney only once, the day after the slaying, to ask him what he'd seen. Denney told him he hadn't seen or heard anything. Maxwell said he looked around while in Denney's apartment and didn't see any blood either inside or between the two buildings. He said Denney had no visible injuries.

This morning, jurors will hear from Heather Champion, Denney's former girlfriend, who told prosecutors last month that a Zippo lighter found in Parker's apartment resembles one Denney had.a Panel explores end-of-life issues STAFF REPORTS End-of-life ethical dilemmas will be explored at a videoconference and discussion on Wednesday.
