of WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 2007 DemocratandChronicle.com DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE "Taking your veterans and shoehorning them is unacceptable." CHRIS HOLLFELDER of Gates Canandaigua. Veteran Ray Boda of Bloomfield, Ontario County, said that when he started to work for the Canandaigua V.A. in 1951, more than 2,200 patients were on campus. Now, the center has about 170 patients on campus, but treats about 17,000 veterans each year, many as outpatients. Sen.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, spoke at the outset of Tuesday's meeting and expressed support for mandatory funding for veterans services. Such a system would help ensure that funding levels meet current needs. Clinton also urged that a committee from the community be set up to keep watch over V.A. activities. Clinton also spoke about the need for reform.

"Let's clean up the backlog and take a look at all the cases that have been denied," she said. Questions were raised about how vacant buildings would be used. V.A. officials and panel members said that the buildings rented would be reused for activities related to veterans, such as housing. "It's not that we don't want to provide services," said panel member Daniel Hayes, who is president of Finger Lakes Community College.

But some in the audience said that the V.A. should be expanding services rather that trying to free up buildings to rent to the private sector. The Schreiners, who live in Ontario, Wayne County, were shopping to raise diabetes awareness, one of many things they do on behalf of their only child, Ashley, 12. A Wayne Middle School seventh-grader, Ashley was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 20 months old. Her pancreas doesn't make insulin, a hormone that helps the body properly break down the sugar ingested in food. Type 1 is the most severe form of diabetes, and doctors have yet to determine the disease's cause or cure. "I'd say (Ashley) is mature beyond her years because of all the challenges she's had to deal with in her life," said Laurie Schreiner.

Until age 5, Ashley received daily insulin injections. Now she uses a small, square insulin pump. The hardest thing is managing blood sugar levels, said Ashley, a member of the Na- Shootings FROM PAGE 1B ter. Williams died of his wound 40 minutes later. State Supreme Court Justice Francis A.

Affronti ordered Daymen held without bail in the Monroe County Jail pending a bail application by his lawyer. Daymen, who was arrested March 22 in Winter Springs, told Rochester police homicide investigators that he fought Nov. 6 with a man who mistakenly thought Daymen had been selling drugs on the other man's turf outside the Garson Avenue home of Daymen's girlfriend. After the fight, Daymen said, he had a neighbor call "my goons," who showed up in a car and stalked a group that included the man with whom Daymen had fought, according to court documents. Daymen told investigators that he was getting out of the for a fistfight at Grand and Baldwin when two of his friends unexpectedly opened fire from inside the car with two pistols, hitting Williams and Wynne.

Neither had been involved in the previous fight, Daymen said. He also told investigators that he hoped his friends would come forward, according to court documents.
