Ponder has been convicted of second-degree murder. Based upon that conviction the pistol permit is denied." Ponder did not appear in court for the matter. Prosecutors seek media muzzle The Monroe County District Attorney's Office has requested that a judge order attorneys involved in the trial of an accused Internet predator to not talk to the media. Monroe County Court Judge Richard Keenan said Friday that he would consider the request, but he also said that "I've been through cases that received more publicity than this." Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the case against James E. Comfort, 28, formerly of Greece.

In this trial, Comfort is accused of raping five girls and women he met over the Internet. Comfort's attorney, John Par-rinello, also requested again that Comfort be released from jail with an electric monitoring device, after Comfort was harassed in the Monroe County Jail this week by other inmates. Keenan denied the request. Man denied bail in murder case No bail was set for a second defendant arraigned Friday in a January shooting death on Avenue D. Terrance Washington, 21, was ordered held in the Monroe County Jail after pleading not guilty to second-degree Irondequoit Gutter and Home Improvements Thanks to the season's heavy snowfall and recent thaw, Kremer's recent work schedule has been jam-packed with estimates for gutter repairs.

According the Kremer, prevention is the best strategy to avoid future gutter repairs. Before next year's snowfall begins, clean the gutters and make sure they are securely attached. Perinton-based roof consultant Tom Hamilton of Advanced Roof Management Inc. has also been busier than usual as ice damming on roofs has led to leaks inside homes. Ice damming occurs when heat escapes from the house, creating one part of the roof that is warmer.

As the snow melts, it begins to run off, then refreezes when it hits a cold patch on the roof. Over time, the ice builds up and additional water has no place to go but under shingles or in holes. While little can be done until the snow completely melts, homeowners can lessen the impact by sweeping as much snow off the roof as possible from the ground with a broom or rake. Do not use shovels or axes to remove ice, as you could do even worse damage. And, stresses Hamilton, do not climb on the roof it is simply too dangerous.

Hire a professional or wait until it melts naturally. To permanently fix the problem, you must know where the heat and hot air are escaping. Hamilton suggests taking pictures of your roof from different angles to record where the ice and snow melt. Then hire an expert who "can truly understand what the ice and melt patterns mean." Former school board member Willa Powell had said she would run for school board again, but she could not be reached for comment Friday to confirm whether she would run this year. Domingo Garcia, president and CEO of the Ibero Investors had announced he would run. Garcia also could not be reached for comment. At least one Green Party candidate will also challenge the board's Democratic monopoly. In fact, David Atias, a suburban alternative education teacher, wants to shake up more than the election process.

"My ideas will revitalize a board that relies on outdated methods of helping students try to achieve outdated goals," Atias said. James R. Gray Funeral Home 247-6360 NEWS BEAT Woman's car found near mall Monroe County sheriff's deputies have recovered one of two cars stolen from an Irond-equoit woman earlier this week. Deputies found the 1999 Toyota Camry about 3 p.m. Friday in a parking lot at 650 Hylan Drive in Henrietta, in the plaza across from The Marketplace mall, said Lt. Glenn Maid.

That was the vehicle stolen from the woman at knifepoint Wednesday at the mall. Police are investigating whether the car was used in a city bank robbery later that day. "We're going over it with a fine-tooth comb, processing the car for fingerprints," Maid said. Early Thursday, someone stole another car a green 1999 Mercury Sable from outside the woman's home. Police are still looking for that vehicle and are investigating the possibility that the same person or people stole both cars.

Killer denied pistol permit A man convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend last year will not get the pistol permit he applied for in 2001. Jerold Ponder, 30, was convicted Feb. 1 in the murder of Zaneta Browne, 29, who was four months pregnant with twins. Her body was found buried just off Scottsville Road. Ponder had applied for the pistol permit in October 2001.

When the matter came up last year, Monroe County Court Judge Frank Geraci Jr. had denied the permit based on his history prior to the shooting. Weather FROM PAGE IB Temperatures will be in the high 30s today, falling tonight toward the mid-2os. Sunday will be colder. The low Sunday night could dip to 8 degrees.

With the dread of winter making a quick turn in the forecast, many people took advantage of Friday's pinprick of spring. Chris Denkie, 13, of Rochester called his buddy Tommy Gogal early Friday to go skateboarding at Ontario Beach Park. "I called him because he was still asleep and I wanted to go out and ride because the pavement was dry," said the Charlotte Middle School student. John Shoaf of Webster and his sons Alec and Aaron went sledding at Durand-Eastman Park. Many schools were out on winter break this week.

"It was a good end to the last day of school vacation," John Shoaf said. But a warm day did not mean a holiday for everyone. Local plumbers such as Jon Gatti of Gatti Plumbing in Greece were dealing with leaky pipes and flooded basements Friday. This week, as the snow and frozen pipes began to thaw, the calls came in for leaking and flooding. "If they let the frozen line go too long, it'll burst," Gatti said.

"Then, when the ice melts, the line starts leaking." Gatti has taken about 12 to 15 calls this week for these kinds of problems. By 1 p.m. Friday, he'd also had about four calls for basement floods. And he. expected more.

In addition, some homeowners are finding that snow-laden roofs are springing leaks and ice-clogged gutters are giving way to gravity. "This is what I live for, I hate to say," said Scott Kremer of Schools FROM PAGE IB up if he's elected. Eagle said he would be willing to seek employment in another district if he wins one of the four seats because he feels the upcoming election will be one of the most important elections in local history. Eagle said he would force a Democratic primary, if necessary. If he doesn't win the endorsement, Eagle said he would consider running independent of the party.
