DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. ROCHESTER. NY. THURSDAY, MAY 10. 1984 7B! i ut runye iui N.Y.

Times publisher, in Rochester, says press needs to regain public's respect home-delivery of the Democrat and Chronicle or the Times-Union call 232-5550 Sulzberger here to accept Milwaukee Journal. Yesterday, RIT professor Alfred F. Horton thanked Sulzberger and the Times Co. for the donation of the Museum of the Printed Word. The museum collection of more than 200 artifacts, manuscripts and printed material documents 5,000 years of written-and printed communication.

The museum collection was assembled in the 1930s with the help of Elmer Adler, a Rochester native who operated a printing firm headquartered in the Times Building in New York. The collection was on display at the Time Building from 1938 until 1981, when it was donated to RIT. Students have had access to the material in the collection since it was donated, but yesterday was the formal dedication. RIT also yesterday dedicated its newlv reno vated newspaper laboratory, which contains more than $1.5 million in newspaper-printing equipment. Past winners of the Isaiah Thomas Award include Katharine Graham, chairman and chief executive officer of The Washington Post Edward W.

(D)C a us ir newspaper award from RIT By David Galante Oemocal and Chronce Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, chairman and chief executive officer of The New York Times public confidence in the media has sunk to an all-time low, and the press must begin steps to reverse the trend.

Ve have to continue to improve the quality of our (news)papers in order to regain respect," Sulzberger said in Rochester. "The public has become disillusioned, not only with the press, but with government, politicians, doctors. We can't ignore this perception. We have to make the public perceive us as essential to the -says community" Sulzberger was at Rochester Institute of Technology yesterday to receive the school's sixth annual Isaiah Thomas award for newspaper management and to dedicate The New York Times Museum of the Printed Word, which was donated to RIT's School of Graphic Arts several years ago. Sulzberger, publisher of The New York Times since 1963, said he believes the negative image of the media will change, but reporters and editors must accept a more critical public and begin rethinking how they handle the news.

A December issue of Time magazine reported that only 13.7 percent of the public had confidence in the press. Television news is mostly to blame for the 'media's image as insensitive, Sulzberger said. "We see so often the intrusiveness of the television camera," he said. "How can you not be disgusted when a microphone is thrust into the face of the widow who has just been told her son has died?" firnHHii First We're offering home improvement loans APR en oo at a good neighborly rate of We offer home improvement loans of $1,000 to Making home improvements $20,000 for 1 to rrl 1 n- seems to get more expensive For 90 years. "But I'm not saying we should make any conscious efforts to cover more good news." He said most newspapers are at fault for not being readily willing to admit their errors and correct their mistakes. The average circulation of The New York Times is 935,000 daily and 1.5 million Sundays. In Rochester, between 3,500 and 4,000 copies are sold daily and 8,600 Sundays.
