DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. Rochester, N.Y. Aug. 30. 1980 5Q at batavia Klugman cho ice in Jerome; Freedom will defend Cup Cruyff selected NASL star of year by soccer writers wins at FL and four assists in 33 games.

He was sidelined twice by injuries the first time by a broken collarbone. The second time, a broken wrist sent Walsh to the' sidelines for good on Jan. 5. Jenkins to meet Kuhn Fergie Jenkins said he definitely will meet with Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn in New York today to discuss the drug charge the Texas Rangers' pitcher faces in Toronto, Jenkins is scheduled to meet with the commissioner and Marvin Miller, head, of the Major League Baseball Players Association, at 2 p.m. in Kuhn's office.

Jenkins was arrested in Toronto Monday on felony narcotics possession charge, which was reduced to a misde-meanor during a court session Wednesday morning. "This is the first time I've ever been in a courtroom and I don't want to go back," Jenkins said. "Just say I'm happy. It's just nice to be back In base; ball again." Ed Greenspan, Jenkins' attorney, indicated the maximum penalty could be a fine of around $400. Greenspan said he intends to point out during the meeting with the commissioner that "a man is innocent until proven guilty." MC Stiff and Wire Services Dennis Conner was chosen by the New York Yacht Club selection committee yesterday in Newport, R.I., to skipper Freedom in the 24th defense of the America's Cup.

The committee's tradition-bound visit to Freedom's berth came as the inevitable conclusion to the summer-long sailing trials dominated by Conner, a San Diego drapery manufacturer. Minutes earlier, the committee's boat paid its long-expected call on Clipper, the other U.S. contender, to thank per Russell Long for his efforts, which left him a distant second to Conner in the 12-meter yacht races on Rhode Island Sound. Conner trounced Long by two minutes, 37 seconds in the last race of the final trials yesterday. Both yachts were across the starting line ahead of the gun yesterday, but Conner was on a tack that forced him to circle the race committee boat before re-crossing the line.

That allowed Long to gain a 29-second edge. He did not retain the advantage for long. Freedom overtook Clipper on the first leg of the triangular course and rounded the weather mark with a 31 -second lead. Conner led by 37 seconds at the second mark and by 46 seconds as the yachts rounded the leeward buoy in 10-knot, southeasterly Freedom, moving better in the light air, opened up a huge lead on the second beat up the windward leg and rounded the mark two minutes, 54 seconds ahead of Clipper. Long closed the gap on the next leg of the 19.9-mile course but still trailed by 2:37 at the fifth mark, where the race committee halted the match.

Friday's start of the final series between the two foreign yachts vying for the challenger's role was postponed because of the death in France of the father of France 3 helmsman, Bruno Trouble. France 3 and Australia will sail a best-of -seven series to decide which yacht will meet the U.S. defender in the finals beginning Sept 16. Cruyff writers' choice Washington Diplomats midfielder Johan Cruyff has been named the first winner of the Professional Soccer Reporters Association "Star of the Year Award." Cruyff (73 points) was the runaway winner over Los Angeles striker Luis Fernando (54) in the game-by-game balloting by PSRA members. morning briefing The 33-year-old Dutch native started off the North American Soccer League season on a slow note, but finished strong.

He was chosen first star 10 times in the Diplomasts' 13 final games. He finished with 10 goals and 20 assists. Dallas Tornado Coach Al Miller, the only native-born coach in the NASL, said an inability to reach a contract compromise prompted him to submit his resignation after five years with the club. He said he reached the decision Wednesday after two contract discussions with General Manager Kent Kramer failed to "meet at a middle, ground" on the new contract "No way do I want to leave here," Miller said, his voice cracking with emotion, "but this decision had to be made. It is a very complex and complicated situation.

There has been a lot of misunderstanding, and a problem with communication." A major area of disagreement concerned the Tornado's participation in the NASL indoor soccer league. Miller said he wanted more money for the extra games. Kramer said no. "I made the gut decision that if I was going to stay on as the Dallas coach, I wanted to get reimbursed for the indoor season," Miller said. The San Jose Earthquakes have decided not to rehire head coach Bill Foulkes for the 1981 North American Soccer League, season.

Team owner Milan Mandaric announced that Foulkes' one-year contract will not be renewed, nor will he be kept on for the upcoming indoor season. Assistant Coach Tony Simoes was named temporary head coach. The Chicago Sting (21-11) signed Coach Willy Roy to a new one-year contract. Halyk, Walsh return Chris Halyk and Jim Walsh, rookies last year with the Rochester Americans, had their professional contracts extended by the parent Buffalo Sabres. Both players were rookies last season.

Halyk, a center, led the team in scoring (28 goals, 34 assists), in power-play goals (12), and was one of only four players on the American Hockey League team to appear in all 80 games last season for Rochester. Walsh, a defenseman, had two goals Chip DeC Vt and Mm Jaklin Klugman, a smashing winner at Saratoga in his last start on Travere weekend, heads a field of six three-year-olds entered in today's one-mile Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park in Elmont. Owned by actor Jack Klugman, Jaklin Klugman will carry 122 pounds, two less than top-weighted Plugged Nickle; Others in the field are Fappiano, 114 pounds; Herb Water, 110; Current Legend, 117, and Pikotazo, 115. AT FINGER LAKES: Holiday Chip took a 4 'a -length victory over Zepha in the featured eighth race in Farmington. Go Go Destiny was third in the seven-horse field.

Associated Press Howdy Holmes escaped serious injury yesterday when his championship car hit the wall and flipped during a practice session for the California 500 in Ontario, Calif.

Officials at Ontario Motor Speedway said a tire on Holmes' Cos wort h-powered Orbitor may have blown before the accident on turn three of the 2.5-mile oval. The open-cockpit car darted into the outside wall, flipped over on its top and slid into the infield. Holmes, 32, was conscious when pulled from the wreckage. He was rushed to the infield hospital where an examination turned up no serious injuries. But the 1979 Indianapolis 500 rookie of the year was taken to a hospital in nearby Upland for X-rays of a sore rib cage.

The practice session was a prelude to the second and final session of time trials for tomorrow's $290,000 race. USAC SANCTIONS INDY 500 The U.S. Auto Club, apparently having satisfied Indianapolis Motor Speedway President John Cooper's demand for an Connors, McEnroe Benjamin follow up New Orleans General Manager Steve Rosenbloom said the Saints' trade with Miami for Guy Benjamin would take some pressure off Bobby Scott, the injured backup to All-Pro quarterback Archie Manning. But No. 3 quarterback Ed Burns sensed what it means.

"This may make it easier for Bobby Scott not to have to rush back, but to come back in due course and be ready physically to play," Rosenbloom said after the Saints sent two draft choices to Miami for Benjamin on Thursday. It means Benjamin, a third -stringer at Miami, will fill in as No. 2 quarterback at New Orleans at least until Scott comes back from a partially torn knee ligaments. After that, who knows? "It doesn't look good for me," said Burns, a third-year man out of Nebras- ka. "I don't know when he's coming or when they want him ready, but obviously he's in their plans for the future." Mota, major league baseball's all-time leading pinch-hitter with 147 hits in that capacity, will continue as the Dodgers' first base coach, the team announced. Mota, 42, replaces outfielder Pedro Guerrero on the Dodgers' roster. Guerrero was placed on the 21-day disabled list Thursday, effective Aug. 23.

Otto Velez, the Toronto Blue Jays' slugging designated hitter, was placed on the 21-day disabled list by the American League team after suffering a fractured cheekbone in a traffic accident Thursday night. Velez and Minnesota Twins' outfielder. Bombo Rivera were both involved in an accident that left the players with minor injuries. Velez was re-examined in the hospital Friday, and the fracture was discovered. Velez had hit his 20th home run of the season earlier in the day in a game against the Twins.

He also had 62 runs batted in and was hitting .269. Gary Brokaw, a former All-American basketball player at Notre Dame University and a four-year National Basketball Association veteran, was named as a part-time asistant on Digger Phelps' basketball coaching staff Washington Redskins' cornerback Joe Lavender ended his four-day walkout, rejoining the team in time for last night's exhibition game in Tampa Bay Defensemen Paul MacKinnon and Pat Ribble have signed new contracts with the Washington Capitals. "I don't' think I'm missing out on she said. "I have a better life than any 15-year-old I know. I'm having a good time on the tour, I'm enjoying school, I have a good family and lots of friends. What more could any 15-year-old want?" "Tennis is now work for me," she said. "Once you turn pro, you don't just wear a T-shirt, goof around and do what you want." i Jaeger, who was the youngest person ever to make the main draw here when she competed as an amateur last year, lost to the eventual champion, Tracy Austin, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round.

This year she is seeded eighth and com-; ing off a victory over Austin in the semifinals of a tournament at Mahwah, N.J., last week. Second-seeded Martina Navratilova, who struggled to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 second-round victory over Leslie Allen, observed that a new wave of youngsters, led by Jaeger, had made its mark on women's tennis and that the older players were getting "older and worse." Navratilova numbered herself among the latter. In night matches, fifth-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia made her tournament debut and defeated Renee Richards, 6-4, 7-5. Victor Amaya, the 16th seed, ousted Rick Fagel, 7-5, 7-5, 6-1. Jaeger impressive at auto racing independent race organization, was again given the sanction for the Indianapolis 500.

In June, Cooper had threatened to take the quarter-century sanction of the 500 away from USAC, which he indicated was dominated by a select group of car owners. USAC responded by dissolving its affiliation with the new Championship Racing League, which was a shaky alliance with the rival Championship Auto Racing Teams, and setting up a new 12-man competition committee. RIDLEY TOP QUALIFIER: Rookie Jody Ridley led the second round of qualifying for the Southern 500 stock car race on Monday with a speed of 151.465 mph on the 1.366 Darlington (S.C.) International Raceway track. Dave Marcis of Skyland, N.C., was second fastest with a time of 151.427 mph and Richard Petty, of Randleman, N.C., was third among qualifiers with a time of 150.467 mph. advance John McEnroe, who dethroned Connors last year and is seeded second behind Bjorn Borg, had a tough first set but then eased into the third round with a 7-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Steve Krule-vitz.

Hie Nastase, the 1972 Open champion but unseeded this year, looked tired and sluggish in the humid weather and lost to No. 7 Harold Solomon, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. i Nastase, who was fined $750 for misbehaving in his first-round match, was twice penalized points once for an obscenity and once for throwing a ball at the umpire. He was fined an additional $500 yesterday by the Grand Prix supervisor for twice throwing balls at officials. Two other seeded men also advanced to the third round.

No. 10 Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia beat Chris Mayotte, 6-2, 6'2, 6-2, and No. 13 Brian Gottfried defeated Tim Gullikson, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6. The afternoon matches drew a total crowd of 20,026, the most ever to watch a session of any tennis tournament except Wimbledon, which sells grounds passes as well as stadium seats. The paid crowd was 17,872.

Open an impressive one with a 6-0, 6-2 second-round victory yesterday over Jeanne DuVall. "I'm not going to put pressure on myself by predicting how far I might go," said the 15-year-old Jaeger, who had a first-round bye. "I'm here to have fun, gain experience and do the best I can." Jaeger's best was far too much for the 21-year-old DuVall, a baseline player with few attacking weapons. Jaeger, her blonde hair bouncing around in two floppy pony tails, returned virtually everything hit in her direction with strong groundstrokes, occasionally venturing to the net behind deep approach shots. She won the first nine games of the match and was never in any trouble.

Also enjoying an easy second-round match was third-seeded Jimmy Connors, who blasted Butch Walts, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, in his second strong showing. Connors won this event in 1974, 1976 and 1978 and is eager to keep up his string of successes in even years. "Today's scores weren't close," said Connors, "but we played good tennis out there.
