Bosley drilled a ninth- inning pinch hit homer to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves and a sweep of their three-game series with the Braves.

Bosley drilled a 3-2 pitch deep over the right-center field fence to lead off the ninth inning. "I was looking for a pitch I could drive," Bosley said. "At 3-2, I didn't think he wanted to walk me. He got another pitch out over the plate. I got my hand through there, and the ball jumped." Bosley, batting for winning reliever Ron Meridith, 2-0, ripped his fifth homer off Rick Camp, now 2-6.

Bosley leads the National League with 16 pinch hits. Lee Smith pitched the ninth for his 27th save. Braves' first baseman Bob Homer admitted the season is all but over for the Braves. "You've got to play for pride the rest of the way," Horner said. "Obviously, we don't have any kind of chance at winning the pennant or even really finshing too high." Atlanta tied the score 2-2 in the seventh.

Pinch-hitter Gerald Perry led off with a walk and went to second on Milt Thompson's infield single to knock out starter Derek Botelho. Reliever Warren Brusstar got Rafael Ramirez to hit into a force out, leaving runners at first and third. Dale Murphy reached on Brusstar's error, allowing Perry to score and advance Ramirez to second. Bob Horner followed with an RBI double. As in the past few years Logan must avoid injuries because of depth problems. "Injuries could be a big factor," Baldini said. The reason for all this optimism is the return of the entire starting offensive faackfield and the leadership of the team's seniors.

"Our strong points are our offensive backfield and our senior leadership. We have everybody back in the backfield and we think that's a plus," Baldini said. Among those returning in the backfield are quarterback Scott Anspach, who completed 55 percent of his passes for over 800 yards and seven touchdowns while guiding the Berries over the last half of the season. "Just like last year Scott doesn't look spectacular in practice but he gets the job done," Baldini said. "He's steady.

We can run him and he's just a heads-up quarterback." Other tight ends are juniors Eric Jordan and Tony Hardin. The starting tackle positions will be manned by juniors Ted Friedline, who moves there from fullback, and Bob Newcom, who missed last year after knee surgery. Others at tackle are senior Danny Mclntyre and juniors Pat Rombold and Mike Haynes. Junior Joey Ricci will start at center. "He's looked good and come a long way since last year," said Baldini.

Junior Tom Shannon will also play center. At the receiving positions senior Mick Schoenradt, who also the backup quarterback, and senior Matt Chentnik.
