"I should not bedding justice to my ambitions if I were tn stity behind," ho wid. Mr. Roosevelt hnd expressed desire to go into the covnlry service, nnd Pros- ident McKinloy offered him the colonelcy of regiment. But ho did not feel tlmt ho wns qxmlifled to tuko conininnd of regiment, us ho hnd rcceivcil nbso- hitoly no military training.

"Put my COI.ONKI. WOOD. friend Dr. Wood in (is colonel," lie said, "nnd 1 will be willing to tuko KOC- oiul placo. What I wish to do is to or- gtuiizo a regiment of rough riders, western cowboys and Indian I bo- lievo that such a body will prove extremely serviceable in a war in Cuba." The idea took like wildfire.

Roosevelt's rough riders became a household word at once. The papers teemed with the topic. And soon tlio desk of tho assistant secretary was piled high with letters from all parts of the Union from men anxious to be enrolled in tho ranks of tlio First regiment of mounted riflemen, or, in other words, "Roosevelt's rough riders, the name whoso alliterative charm struck on tho ours of every man who knew how to ride a horse. There were many surprises in this mail. It was not alone tlio rough riders of tho west who wanted to join Teddy's regiment.

It is true that about every cowboy of note, men from all purts of tlio former frontier, from Texas to Idaho, were eager to volunteer under tlio valiant Roosovelt, who at least showed that ho hud red blood in his vuins. But there came other notes. There were society men in Kew York just as eager. Not tlio slender, good for nothing dudes of society, but the husky, hustling fol- kind tlmt go in for athletics, for polo and racing and limiting mid other out of dour sports afield or afloat. Then camo demands from tho colleges.

Men famed on the football teams, in tho racing shells, in tho gymnasiums of tho great institutions of learning put in their applications. There wore enough offers to lill a dozen regiments, and Mr. Roosevelt said tho saddest part of tho business was tlio necessity of drawing the lino. Among tho New Yorkers who surprised their friends by volunteering wero tho hapless Hamilton Fish, whoso fame previously hud been buildod on less honorable lines; Woodbury Kane, tho brother of Duluncoy Kane; Towusend Burden, Willie Tiffany, Reginald Ronalds and Craig Wuds- worth. In every ono of these young men flowed fighting blood, though its presence had not perhaps been suspected.

Woodbury Kane came of lighting Block. His brother, Colonel Deluncoy Kane, was a graduate) of West Point, and another brother was graduate of Annapolis. The hitter, S. Nicholson Kane, is on tho stuff of Captain Sigsboo of tho Yale. Craig Wadsworth comes of tho lighting Geneseo Wadsworths.

William Tiffany is a nephew of tho lato Mrs. August Belmout, and therefore a groat-grandson of Commodore Perry. Reginald Ronalds won his chief fame in tho peaceful buttles of football nnd other rough and tumble games. There wore other rough riders to bo tinned in tho oust. Thoro was Iliggins of tho Sixtli cavalry, who fought Indians to the death before ho wont on tho Now York police force; there wore Guy Marchie, tho Harvard coach, nnd Dudley Dean, the most famous quarter back that Harvard overbad; there wore Waller, tho champion high jumper of Yale; Bull of California, ono of the leading members of tho Harvard orow; Hornet) Dovcruuux, front Colorado Springs, a leader in the Princeton team; Basil Rh-kotts, son of tho lute Gon- (irul Ricketts, cT, S.

and a host of young men who hud already made numott for themselves in one way and another. Against these college bred men wan tho dark but spirited background of the western bnivos, men from Arizona and Oklahoma, Now Mexico and tho Indian Territory; cowboys and miners, bred to tho use of tho horse and the yiflo, to savuge enemies in ambush and to rough life in tho open am "Teddy's Terrors" they camo to bo culled, for they grew weary of tho long wait and at frequent intervals woke up the echoes of Sim Au- touio, the rendezvous of tho regiment, with tho echoes of wild shooting and, liaruni scaruro scrapes and rows an4 inipiuture battles of all sorts. On May 7 Mr. Roosevelt took tho outh of allegiance aud was sworn in as lieutenant colonel of tho First volunteer rcgiuicul of mouutcd riftos. Aj duy or two later hu met a party of Washington recruits und spoke his platform iu a few brief und forcible words: "Ueutlemen, you liavo uow voaehotl tho lust point.

Think It over, nnd if nny mnii wishes to withdraw ho will bo gladly excused, for hundreds nto ready to hi ho his place," There Was not blanched cliook or qwniling oyo in tho crowd, fcager expectancy aud anxiety for action were photographed in every face. Nor from that day to this hns there been nny lessoning of tho spirit with which these men of diverse types entered into their now roles. The ono feeling has been ono of anxiety to get to tho front nnd show tho country what real fighting looked like.

At tho San Antonio camp (ho eastern men dropped all pretensions and became tho commonest kind of common soldiers. They cared for their own horses and polished their own boots; they dug ditches about their camp and lent hand in putting ttp tho tents thnt sheltered them. Army faro was good enough for them, nnd they soon won tho respect of tho rough westerners, who had begun by laughing nt them and calling them "dudes" aud tenderfoot." They showed tho making of real soldiers. It wns while in camp at San Antonio thnt Maxwell Norman of Boston was made first sergeant of Troop and Hamilton Fish, second sergeant These promotions were made for merit. On May 27, after a long, hard siege of camp life, very useful, however, in whipping tho rough riders to shape, the orders ciuno to move to Tampa and join the forces of General Shufter.

They wero very welcome orders. Tho first squadron led tho van; the eastern men followed a day or two afterward. Thoro was a good deal of disappointment when it was learned that tho rough riders wero going to bo rough walkers, tho war department having decided that it could not send their horses to Cuba. But tho prospect of sharp fighting in the near future buoyed up tho men, and they started to tho front without a murmur and with faces that bore a look of do termination and of hope. will givo a good account of themselves.

Daiquiri, in Cuba, as a landing placo for tho first corps of tho American army, whoso mission is to drive the Spanish awny from Cuba, necessarily brings to memory that only a few miles to the east of that anchorage, at Las Palmus, in November, 101J, Diego Velasquez lauded tho expedition which was to conquer tho island of Cubanucau for tho kings of Spain. Both places, Baiquiri and LasPulmas, and also La Cuimuiicru, where Huntingtoii's marines are now camped, are situated on that portion of Cuba known at tho time of tho Spanish conquest as tho province of Baitiquiri, whoso ruler was Hutuey. Hatney was the first victim of Spain's tyranny in Cuba. Ho took arms against tho invaders, but soon fell into tho hands of Velasquez and was burned alive for his crime. To tho priest who was with him until the lust moment, and who exhorted him to pray that ho might go to heaven, Hatney asked, "Father, whore do the Spaniards go after their death?" "To lion von, was tho priest's immediate reply.

"Then," tho unfortunate chief exclaimed, "let mo alone.
