"One of our road officers, with information from the street, started to work on a hunch and was very determined to follow through on this hunch," Canandaigua Police Chief Patrick McCarthy said yesterday. The investigation led to "a mystery man who visited the city during the weekend of the attacks," he said. Police now say that mystery man is Dale F.

Vereecken, 22, of Chestnut Street Extension, Franklinville, Cattaraugus County. He was arraigned yesterday morning in Canandaigua City Court Court on one count of first -degree sodomy in connection with an attack on a 14-year-old girl Oct. 13. The incident allegedly took place about 11 p.m. in a field behind a pizza parlor on South Main Street.

Vereecken is being held in the Ontario County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. She was elected to the legislature in 1973 from the 7th District and lost a reelection bid in 1975 against Vincent Campbell. She lost again to Campbell in 1977. Democrat Samuel Colombo, the legislature's new minority leader, defended the move to raise the research assistant's pay to $16,000. "I think we need someone who knows what they're doing," Colombo said. "I think we can attract a much better person at $16,000 than at $12,000.

It would still be a considerable pay cut for Marilyn. "This is the only staff position we'll have the next two years. The Republicans will have the clerk's staff, the administration and a research assistant. We have only a research assistant," Colombo said. Republican Edwin Foster, who will chair the Finance and Budget Committee, said $16,000 is too much.
