Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Tuesday, August 20, 1985 Page 9 Sports Colts Waive 9 Players, More Cuts Expected ANDERSON, Ind. (UPI) Coach Rod Dowhower Monday waived nine players, leaving 11 more needed to be trimmed from his Indianapolis Colts' roster by Tuesday to get down to the NFL limit of 60. The football players released were defensive backs Thomas Morris and Bill Kay, linebackers Jim Golden and Geff Gandy, defensive end Robert Poles and offensive tackle David Burnett. Also cut were running back Joe McCall, tight end Cleo Simmons and center Ian Sinclair. The Colts, back in training camp following Saturday's 24-13 victory at Chicago, stand at 2-0 for the exhibition season with game No.

3 at Denver Saturday. Dowhower and his staff were spending time Monday reviewing films of the Chicago game as they decide who will remain on SMU Accepts Penalty DALLAS (UPI) Southern Methodist University officials had a choice of either mounting an expensive and lengthy legal battle with the NCAA or taking their medicine. They chose the latter. "We are going to do our best to be good citizens as far as getting along with the NCAA is concerned," SMU president L. Donald Shields said Monday.

"Everything added up to a unanimous conclusion of the board of governors, including the president, that a suit would not be in the best interests of all aspects of the SMU thus accepted, although not that graciously, the most stringent punishment the NCAA has dealt to a football program. A 29-month NCAA investigation led to SMU being placed on three years probation last Friday. The school cannot award a scholarship next year and only 15 the next season. That amounts to a loss of 45 over two years. Also, the Mustangs, favorites to win the Southwest Conference title, cannot go to a bowl game the next two seasons and cannot be on television in 1986.

It was the fourth NCAA sanction against the school in 11 years. SMU officials gave consideration to a major legal assault on the NCAA because they felt they had been singled out for extraordinary punishment. "I never argued that SMU did not deserve severe penalties," said Shields. "But we did feel the severity of the penalties was three times harsher than any before." The bulk of the investigation dealt with recruiting violations by what the NCAA calls "representatives" of a school's athletic interests. That term usually refers to alumni or monied backers of an institution.

Shields and the school's attorney, John McElhaney, insist such persons were at fault in SMU's case rather than head coach Bobby Collins or athletic director Bob Hitch. The most obvious infraction listed by the NCAA indicated more than $11,000 had been paid to a potential recruit and his family. Published reports have said that recruit was Sean Stopperich of Canonsburg, Pa. Stopperich eventually enrolled at SMU, but has now transferred to Temple. "We have identified people (outside interests involved in illegal recruiting).

Four of those people have permanently been disassociated with the school not just the football program, but the entire school. Dwight Walker of Royal Center and Bruce Murphy of Denver teamed up to finish second in the C-2 Super Aluminum division.

It was the second straight year the pair finished second. Murphy and Betsy Walker, also of Royal Center, placed seventh in the Mixed Super Aluminum with a time of 2:32. Dwight Walker and Billy Hutson of Mentone were also 10th in the C-2 Stock Aluminum with a time of 2:44. the roster once the Tuesday afternoon deadline has passed. Eventually, the roster will be reduced to the regular season maximum of 45 players.

Sure bets to remain with the club are quarterbacks Mike Pagel and Art Schlichter, but nobody is positive which one will be the starting signal-caller once the regular season begins. Pagel started at Chicago and had the better performance, hit- ting 9 of 19 passes 133 yards. The Colts scored 17 points while he was in the game. Schlichter, who will start at Denver, hit only 4 of 11 passes for 42 yards. One of his throws was intercepted.

"As times goes on, it will become more and apparent I'm going to be the starter," Pagel predicted. "I feel I did the job they asked me to do," Scihlichter said. "It just so happened we didn't do a lot of things that, hopefully, we'll do during the regular season." Dowhower continues to warn fans not to rely too much on pre-season results. "When you're last in the league in throwing the ball and you're showing people a new offense with a lot of options, you can't expect immediate results," he said. "But we're doing OK." 4 DAYS ONLY!
