10 years ago. "The gold around a. single person's neck could send a child to college," commented the 60-year-old, New York-based, Oscar winning actress. "And the cars the Beverly Hills ladies have to drive to prove to each other they're It used to be a Mercedes. Now a Mercedes isn't enough now they're Rolls Royces.

But none of it's going to help because the laugh's on them." The joke, as McCambridge sees it, is that "God, in all his infinitesimal wisdom, put most of the oil in one place and now all those people from that place are coming here. And all those Beverly Hills ladies with their $1000 purses and their $2000 boots, well, they might as well give up because on Rodeo Drive they're now the poor. It's the Arabs in Beverly Hills who are the rich." Mercedes finds this ironically delightful: "No matter how hard we try, outside forces somehow seem to take control of our lives out of our hands these days." "I want to be producing my own projects by '1981, and Irwin has a way of putting together all the top people actors, writers, technical people on his films. What better way to get to know them?" Barbara's really hoping to get to know her love interest in the "World" who, at this writing, is expected to be Jim Fran-ciscus.

The beauty who has been linked romantically with the likes of Robert DeNiro and producer Bob Evans said she'd like there to be "some great chemistry" between herself and her movie love. McGuire and Hargrave Funeral Home, Inc. does help sweeten the breath. care of Dr. David Goldblatt, DEAR ANN: I'm sick and tired of you telling people that there are too darned many guns in this country. Don't you read the papers? How come you don't know what is going on? I have two handguns in my home and one in my car.

I wouldn't give them up for anything. Quit being so unrealistic on this subject. You owe it to your readers to encourage them to protect themselves. Whose side are you on, anyway? Dallas Ex-Fan DEAR EX: It drives me up the wall the way you and millions of other Americans cling to the foolish notion that a gun is protection when statistics show that nine times out of ten the intruder is a much better shot than the law-abiding citizen and quicker on the draw, too. I feel strongly that this country needs a federal gun law.

Every poll in recent years shows that the majority of our citizens want one. When our congressmen and senators muster enough courage to stand up to the gun lobby in Washington, we are going to have a safer country for everybody. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Our English teacher claims that all the letters in your column are made up by you or members of your staff. I think she is mistaken. It Strong Memorial Hospital.

This method has added to my comfort doesn't seem possible that you could have gotten away with a phony operation for so many years. VVU1 you please convince her that you are for real? Clinton, Iowa CLINT: This response is for you, not your English teacher. It would be ridiculous to make up letters. What goes on in people's lives is far more interesting than anything I could invent. Moreover; nothing is so bizarre, so ridiculous or weird, that somebody, somewhere, won't do it.

My problem is that so many fascinating, usable, thought-provoking letters cross my desk every day, I have a difficult time deciding which letters to publish. As for your English teacher and others who think I make up letters don't try to change their minds. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." DEAR ANN LANDERS: I am writing this for the person who wanted to know how to clean his dentures when he dined out in public. You asked if anyone out there had Steimer, Matilda C. Jan.
