HELD OVER 2nd SMASH WEEK 9- iiwT-ny NOT WALK Hh TO 'THE firm rntrrya' rt m.m 8C I Vic populai rucisi A CONDITIONED CLEOPATRA SHOWN AT 110 Oft I II Season Opener Town, Co untry Presents Farce By JEAN WALRATH If "Sunday in New York" was hardly a danler among gems in its original Broadway setting, it looked just about right last night on summer theater stage as the opener of the Town and Country Playhouse in East Rochester. FUNNIEST COMEDY OF THE YEAR! 0 ROttKT WA6KCK CAPUQNE. li I'l 4 ACADEMY AWARDS THE PINK PANTMERJJ 7 fxptricncc in I lifetime ill that OAUDUCARDINAlE TtouucoLM- nomawu' FRILWi Jt-tMITNtffl it is tniikely that yt wi3 jm win sec TUE lost rm Uvmc mtmmt MIMtAHMtlMTt HWV I liM CmH I IJ10-1 i IS-f ll I LOEW I ixtia IXHIIITIN6 ATTRACTION ADOIO r. -r2-i Tfc fbifei Norman Krasna's comedy, bordering on bed-in-a-living-room farce, arrived with the fifth season of Barry Tuttle's theater in the East Rochester School auditorium. The theater for the opening was well filled, and the audience, with good reason sounded pleased.

Kathy Nolan as the girl who can't say yes, is a pert, curving redhead, and plays rather sweetly the nice girl from Albany who runs into a rather familiar old story in New York. All on one rainy Sunday in her brother's apartment she begins the day without any man to call her own and ends it with two too many. She becomes the not altogether innocent victim of appearances that are not what they seem to be when her fiance bolts into the apartment (never locked, of course). At the climax ev-erbody is chasing around for scattered bits of clothing while the boy friend from upstate stands there, seeing nothing. The ageless setup for hilarity involves a youthful music critic from Philadelphia, played by Roger Smith of movies and tele- vision; an airplane pilot brother who owns the apartment (David Hull, seen on television and stage) and the clean living Albany fiance Russell Wilson, also of stage and television).

Music and dance are threaded ingeniously into the play the dance provided by Martha Webster, who plays all the woman roles except the lead, and George Riddle, the man of odd roles such as a sailor in a movie audience and a Japanese waiter. A swift and tidy job of direction was done by J.oe Brownstone, a veteran in summer and winter stock theater. Miss Nolan, whom televiewers will remember as Kate in "The Real McCoys." is more than adequately supported by Smith and Hull, while all the company comes through nicely. On the whole, it was as smooth a first night for a summer season's beginning as one could hope to see. An all-purpose set which serves for an apartment, a bus, a restaurant, an automobile and a rainy street was created with artistry by Carl Zollo.

The show runs through Sunday.
