Mich. (UPI) Anyone need a planet lifted? Dixon Smith, a B-yearold lab technician, has a gadget he says can lilt the weight of the earth 729 times over. 2 Unlike the ancient Creek mathematician Archimedes who boasted, "Give me a place to stand and I'll move the earth," all Smith needs is a 120-volt electrical utlet to power the electric clock motor that runs his machine. Smith designed and built the unimpos-iag steel and plexiglass contraption in his Borne workshop using $70 worth of materials. It consists of 35 simple gears, some springs and a motor.

It has no useful purpose, he says, except as a possible ticket to place in the Guiness Book of World Records. i just like to tinker with things, and I wanted to get into the Book of Records," Smith said. Reading Guiness recently, Smith found that the slowest moving designed mechanism in the world is a clock in the town hall of Copenhagen, Denmark. It will take 25,700 years for the celestial pole motion of the clock to complete a full circle, the book says. -'Child's play.

Smith says. He figures his gadget will set two world records. 'tt's got to be the slowest moving designed mechanism and it's got more torque than any other instrument in the world," he said. The first gear whirls around at 3,000 revolutions per minute and each succesive gear moves 15 times slower than the preceeding one. The nth gear will make a complete torn every 24 years, Smith says.

Gear No. 14 will revolve once every 73,448 years, and so down the line. Gear No. 35, Smith says, will complete revolution once every F10 -tf rf DI8IIER SPECIAL 1 WHrhrnmrf(UMnftSyfbMfi IT I Ii jBn.Tfcnhr.-6fw wsta l'IHf sLvH 9 PLUS 2ND ADULT HIT1 1 TIIWMWMOOW fm i I i "I I il.y BROILED PORK CHOPS 9 i Soud or juict. salad, potato or wgetaNe rolls, burttr.

Of course, you could never use it, but it's there." 46,366.140,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 centuries.

(UPI) Some of Maryland's brightest high school students serve as legislative pages to learn about government. But a few of the female pages believe they're getting more from the seamy side of politics than they bargained for.

From a small minority of the House of Delegates, they say they've encountered sexual comments, advances and, in a few instances, outright propositions. Linda Vars, 17 of Burkettsville, said one delegate grabbed a page by her arm and laughingly asked another delegate whether "he could be arrested on the floor of the legislature for rape." ANOTHER PAGE, she said, was asked ta come to a delegate's hotel room but declined I Miss Vars said at one late session "one of the delegates told us that at 12 o'clock his friend was going to drop his drawers "The problem is some of these people don't realize they are not dealing with their' normal constituency you might say a more adult constituency." Miss Vars said telling off a delegate is not that easy because "you can't tell somebody that high up to take a flying leap." BUT BRISCOE insists pages "have never been told these delegates are high and mighty" and they are to report indiscretions. Briscoe does not think the "problem is serious enough to call it to the attention of the public and jeopardize a very fine program." Pages are selected by local school boards and each page serves during two separate weeks of the session so there is a turnover every week. "We're supposed to be learning about the real nitty gritty of politics, not this sort of thing," said Sharnette Gaillard, 17, of Suitland. and that all virgins will have to turn their heads." Sara Arthur, 18, said one buxom page was greeted with the comment she "certainly had nice just say it was part of the body The girls who would talk about the problem said only about 10 per cent of the House members are invqlved.

Most of the remarks, the girls say, are in jest, but not all There have been no complaints about the Senate. HOUSE SPEAKER John Hanson Briscoe, who says he severely reprimands legislators when he hears of incidents, thinks legislative efficiency may be part of the cause. "Maybe it's because they've got a lot more idle time," he said. "By streamlining our procedures, it's given members idle time When you're sitting there hours at a time, matters of joke and jest are very frequent.
