One Such Problem One of the problems, for example, will be to insure that sterilization methods can wipe out any bacteria which might be enclosed in a completed electronic component such as a conductor.

The year-long research and development work is expected to be followed by the test-ing of a small space probe assembled from parts that have been sterilized. "It could then be taken to signed the formidable task of developing ways to decontaminate U.S. space probes to the moon, Mars and Venus. It has received a $160,000 research and development contract from the National Space and Aeronautics Administration to conduct the work. The contract calls for the development of sterilization techniques that that would yield less than a one-in-a-million chance of landing a microbe or spore on another planet.

It is part of the stated policy of the U.S. space program to guard against the possible contamination of other planets by rocket-riding terrestrial organisms. Such contamination, scientists maintain, would confuse any future biological studies Amused by the impasse, Dr. Perkins finally hit upon a solution. He directed the student's attention to a portrait hanging on" the library wall a portrait of the historian himself, presented to him by the university last year.
