Read The Want Ads Daily Reynolds Is Dodging Burt Reynolds isn't really hiding out in Chicago, he's just dodging the press. "Time, Newsweek, The Associated Press, the Manchester Guardian they've all tried to get me," Burt said modestly from Arlington Park, 111., where he's starring in iThe Rainmaker." "But I haven't talked to anybody." The reason Burt isn't talking is the April issue of Cosmopolitan.

It hits the stands this week. The magazine features its first-ever, long-promised centerfold ala Playboy. And guess who's the first nearly-nude? I "He's a rising star," said Cosmo's star editor Helen Gurley Brown not long ago. "He's got a beautiful body. He's adorable, and I can assure you he's totally heterosexual." That's some assurance.

Reynolds may fit the bill, but he considers the whole a hilarious put-on. "I did it because it was fun and funky and a good send-up for playboy and all its male chauvinist nonsense. The philosophies of Hugh Hefner and Helen Gurley Brown are those of paper-doll cutouts. "I don't take this sex symbol stuff seriously. I rather doubt that the chicks in the roller derbies are going to paste me up on their lockers.

I expect a lot of girls to be turned off by it." A "VERY BIG MOTION PICTURE STAR," according to Reynolds, had already posed for Mrs. Brown: She's particular. She turned him down. Burt, who did the assignment for free, asked for picture approval. He received it.

Buhe admits that the pictures show very little tg approve or disapprove. or without approval, Burt was displeased: "I opened the magazine," he complained, "and I look like I've been studying humility with Gene Barry. Apparently the people at Cosmo took this thing more seriously than I did. I preferred the shot where I was laughing at myself; now I'm just smugly smiling. "I expect to bethe butt of jokes.

Every time I get on a plane now, broads will whistle. But, that's OK. I happen to like women." The woman Burt likes best these days is Dinah Shore. "She's a classy lady," Burt says. "Her head's screwed on well snd she has great taste.

That's why I'm not seeing other She's all I can handle. "Dinah saw the picture months ago. She saw the humor In It I'll tell you, if she had thought it was awful, I'd have thought twice about going through with this." As for the pinup itself, well, clever shading allows some-uung for the imagination. "Some ladies have already called this a copout," grunts Burt. "That's ludicrous.

I wouldn't have done it any other way. The other way is for John and Yoko." "The Cosmopolitan thing is fantastic," said Karen Fox, who just purchased a copy in Midtown. "But they don't go far enough. There ought to be a magazine called 'PlayghT filled with pictures of good looking men a magazine just for us girls.

I'm not just a Burt Reynolds fan, I'm a male body fan." "That is nice," said a tall attractive black girl as she riffled through the magazine. "But next time they ought to use a black guy like Isaac Hayes or 0. J. Simpson or Jim Brown, or. WHY THE CENTERFOLD? A one-page precede to the picture explains, "We had the feeling that the reason naked women abound in magazines is that, until recently, those in control of publication have been who thought only of pleasing their brother men, and neglected the visual appetites of us equally appreciative girls.

"Some people (mostly men, past 50,) thought our idea a perfect scandal. Women, they blustered, are not turned on by nakedness in a man We were not impressed by this antediluvian wiewpoint the girls we know think men's bodies are wonderful, and find a good-looking man wearing only his taut, tightly muscled skin a pleasure to gaze upon." The layout on Reynolds, who is 36, includes biographical notes and pictures of him with his basset hound, Bertha, and with Dinah Shore, whom he currently dates. He formerly was married to comedian Judy Carne. From IC and say 'WOW! the older women just look and stare." WHAT DO THE BUYERS think? Well, most of 'them think it's great. Their remarks usually begin with something like, "If guys can look at Playboy "If it's okay for guys, it's okay for girls," said Louise Palmeri.

"There are about ten copies floating around our office already." "I bought it because I love Burt Reynolds," laughed Robin Crouse. "Cosmopolitan couldn't have picked a better body." "He's hairy but cute," added Linda Sablosky. There were even a few men buying the magazine but not for themselves, they quickly explained. "I'm picking it up for my girl friend," said a young man trying to hide the magazine in his overcoat. "She's afraid they'll be all sold out by the time she gets out of work.

She said if I didn't get it for her she'd kick me all over Midtown. I think the whole thing is stupid." Another young man who was buying Cosmopolitan for his fiancee, said she was planning to rip out the centerfold and present it as a gift to her chauvinistic future father-in-law. "He was making cracks about it last night," he explained. An older man watching the flurry of sales at the Sibley's store, walked over to the stack of magazines, picked one up and thumbed through it. "My God," he muttered when he got to the centerfold.
