SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2003 DemocratandChronicle.com DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE Brooklyn soldier honored THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK A soldier killed in Iraq when his vehicle hit a landmine was buried Friday with full military honors and remembered as a proud young man who loved his uniform and country. Pfc. Rayshawn Johnson, who was given up for adoption at age 7, was eulogized at a two-hour service in Brooklyn attended by his biological mother, the adoptive mother who raised him as well as scores of relatives, friends and public officials. "I never thought it would be like this," said Patty Johnson, the soldier's biological mother. "It makes me so proud that people love him.

I always wanted him to be a good person at heart, and actually it came true for me," she said. Johnson, 20, was assigned to the 299th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, in Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed when his vehicle hit a landmine in Tikrit on Nov. 3. "When he returned to the neighborhood, he refused to come out of his greens," his aunt, Rosalyn Winter, told mourners at his funeral.

"He wanted everyone to know this was a foster child who became a member of another family. The U.S. Army made a man of Rayshawn," Winter said. At his funeral at the Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Deborah Winter, who adopted Rayshawn Johnson when he was 7 and raised him along with eight other children, sobbed as Major Gen. Ronald Johnson pinned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star on her lapel.

"It is my hope that one day this will stop," said Gen. Johnson, who was not related to the slain soldier a and is scheduled to go to Iraq in January. "But I am not afraid because it is soldiers like Pfc. Johnson who make me want to do this even more. When I go to Iraq I will never forget Pfc.

Rayshawn Johnson." Mark Boykin, a longtime friend, said Johnson volunteered for military service "so that every person in here can continue to do whatever they do." Johnson was buried in the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale with a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps." Man pleads innocent in sex abuse case THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RIVERHEAD A man who pastored at an eastern Long Island church pleaded innocent Friday to sex abuse charges after surrendering to police in Southampton, prosecutors said. Vicente Elias Lopez, 44, of East Quogue, was arraigned before Suffolk County Court Judge C. Randall Hinrichs on five counts of sexual abuse and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, said Robert Clifford, a spokesman for the Suf- folk County district attorney. If convicted of the most serious charges, he could be sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison. Lopez, who is known as "Brother Elias," to the members of the Aqueboque-based Living Waters Gospel Church, allegedly engaged in sexual activity with three girls all under the age of 11, Clifford said.
