And judging by the sheer joy on the faces of judges, parents, and educators, in the end there were no losers. More than 40 students from more than a dozen city schools, exhibited their storytelling abilities on Tuesday in the eighth-annual Storytellers Festival at East High School.

The festival, presented by the Rochester School Library System and supported by HSBC Bank, brings together winners of in-school competitions in grades 3 through 8. "These kids just bloom when they come here. "They get to show a side of themselves that they can't always show in school," said Linda Cruttenden, director of the School Library System. "The confidence that each of these kids have in themselves comes through so strong," said Robert Boyd, senior area vice president for HSBC. Effective storytelling requires memorization, acting, and the development of a convincing verbal style.

So for weeks before the event, pupils in each school worked with library staff on projection, eye contact, pacing, physical ex- pression, enunciation and other storytelling skills they needed to hone. Jill Lein, library media specialist at School 19, helped coach four kids starting in mid-February. Although she coached them, Lein said she saw two of the boys "in the last minute throw in something a little extra special tonight." "They knew they were in a competition." Students, separated by grade level, performed in different rooms simultaneously. And the results were thrilling. Marquise Morrell, 12, a sixthgrader at School 8, recited the story Anansi Does The Impossible by Verna Aardema and Lisa Desimini.

"The moral of the story is: If use your mind successfully, you will succeed," Marquise said in closing. Since Marquise chose not to practice his story at home, his mom, Sherri Morrell, heard his performance for the first time. "He made me wait. He made me wait," she said smiling. "I heard about how good he I'm really impressed." Although, Marquise and the performances of many other students were impressive, everyone couldn't win.
