Damien Settles, 19, of Rochester was shot in the right arm and side about 11:15 p.m., said Rochester police Capt. Joe Sturnick.

He said Settles' injuries were "fairly serious" and he was taken to Rochester General Hospital. His condition was not immediately available. Settles was shot in a vacant lot, and his attacker or attackers then drove off in a car, Sturnick said. Police have not established a motive, saying Settles was not being cooperative. Settles ran to a relative's house, where police were called.

Faggiano has $25,200 left in his account. Republican Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn has $41,600 on hand to spend after paying out more than $13,000 over the last three months, primarily for mailings.

But that doesn't include television advertisements featuring O'Flynn, which were paid for by the Monroe County Republican Committee, said county GOP chief Stephen J. Minarik. In the county clerk's race, Republican Maggie Brooks has $9,100 on hand to spend for the next month, while her Democratic challenger Eftihia Bourtis has less than $400. The county Republican Party spent $40,000 on television and radio advertisements with Wahl Media, more than half of the total the committee spent during the last three months. But the GOP still has more than $110,000 on hand to spend.

The Republican Party reports didn't outline any direct cash outlays to specific candidates. But the Republican Legislature Campaign Committee, another GOP fund-raising agency, states that it spent $35,000 on expenses for mailings on behalf of legislative candidates. The Democratic Party has far less than the GOP on hand, just $6,200. Democratic Party county Chairman Ted O'Brien said, however, that the party held a fund-raiser last week which raised about $70,000. In addition to the Faggiano transfer, Democrats also gave to other candidates.

Among the biggest $15,000 to county Legislator Stephanie Aldersley, D- Irondequoit, running for re-election in the 16th District. Aldersley is facing Republican Stacey Romeo. $12,000 to state Supreme Court justice candidate Joseph Valentino. Republican Mary Gehl Doyle is his opponent. The party also spent $48,000 on the printing of campaign mailers and the creation of lawn signs.

The $186,400 spent by the Democratic Party is far more than the GOP's expenditure of $76,700. O'Brien said the Republican Party will still end up far outspending his party by November, a comment that isn't disputed by Minarik. "To think we are outspending them is impossible," O'Brien said. The next deadline for candidates to file campaign finance reports is Oct. 26.0 0 Cruz, Cristino October 14, 2001: Survived by 4 sons, Jose, Christian, Cristino Angel; 3 daughters, Shondell, Jessica, Zulaika; three brothers, Juan, William, Heriberto; five sisters, Justina, Liduvina, Francisca, Teresa, Marcelina; grandchildren; other relatives.
