Page 8 THE DAILY HERALD, Tyrone, Saturday, August 11, 1990 Bush Taking Vacation In Midst Of Biggest Military Operation Vietnam WASHINGTON (UPI) President Bush won't permit the biggest U.S. military operation since the Vietnam War to cancel his three-week summer vacation in New England. "Life goes on. You've got to keep moving," Bush told reporters as he left the Oval Office. "You can't stay in one place all the time." The president, joined by family and friends, departed the White House Friday for a 25-day stay at his seaside estate in Kcnncbunkport, Maine.

Press secretary Martin Fitzwater said Bush never gave serious consideration to canceling or even shortening the annual family gathering. But he said he would get daily briefings on the Persian Gulf crisis from a bolstered travel staff. Fitzwater said Thursday that the briefings "would probably be" in the morning and evening. In between, the athletic 66-year-old president is expected to enjoy a daily regimen of jogging, tennis, golf, boating or fishing. Asked if Bush was concerned about public perception being shown on the evening news hitting a golf ball while American soldiers try out gas masks Fitzwater said: "No." 'The fact is that the president will be conducting the business of the presidency at Kcnncbunkport, just as he docs every year and every vacation period." He said Bush would likely return to Washington one day next week for an update on the U.S.

military operation that may eventually have up to 50,000 troops in Saudi Arabia to counter any more Iraqi aggression. "Our forces arc in Saudi Arabia on a defensive basis," Fitzwater said. "They are not involved in conflict, and there's not the need for any kind of minute-by-minute or hour-by-hour update," Fitzwater said. Moreover, he said, "we believe that the (White House) communications system is excellent for maintaining liaison with anyone in Washington or around the world." Last winter, during the U.S. invasion of Panama that involved more than 20,000 Marines, Bush went on an 11-day holiday vacation to Camp David, his adopted home-state of Texas and then to Alabama. He did interrupt the trips, however, to get a Christmas Eve briefing at the Pentagon, and to visit wounded soldiers at two military hospitals in San Antonio on the morning of New Year's Eve. "Look, I don't make any cover," Bush said during that vacation. "I'm going to be enjoying myself and I think the American people understand that I've worked pretty hard all year long." "So I'll keep this path and I hope it is correct." During his 25-day vacation in Maine, Bush will certainly have some work.

Besides monitoring developments in the Persian Gulf, he will continue efforts to reach agreement with Congress on a new deficit-cutting budget. He also plans to attend a couple of GOP fund-raisers in New England, and make a quick trip to Baltimore to address a convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. But mostly it will be play in his beloved Kennebunkport. In his 66, years, Bush has failed to visit Kennebunkport just one year. Blair Co.
