She added that the park provides one of the best views of downtown but few people are aware of that. Dan Buyer, executive director of the South Wedge Planning Committee, said some residents were concerned about an increase in the number of vehicles passing through the neighborhood, but they were appeased by the university's steps to slow the traffic. The University of Rochester plans to rebuild and reopen the roadway closed in 1990 between Ford Street and Elmwood Avenue as part of about $1 million worth of improvements to the area. University spokesman Robert Kraus said the changes are intended to improve public access to and awareness of the city-owned Bausch Lomb Riverside Park. The county trail system also runs along the river there.

"It's a park that is really not on the public consciousness," city Councilman Wade Norwood said. Valerie Johnson-Bentley said she was being punished for being "too involved." She also claims that the administration, led by acting principal Michele Liguori-Alampi, has mistreated her, canceled meetings and events, and stopped sending out a PTO newsletter. Liguori-Alampi was not available for comment Friday. District officials said they were looking into the matter. "The more information I have received, and the more I have held the school accountable," the more she has been criticized, said Johnson-Bentley.

The letter, signed by Liguouri-Alampi and dated April states that Johnson-Bentley's duties "should cease as of this date" and outlines several "major areas of concern." They include: failure to follow the rules associated with timelines, fiscal accountability, fund-raising, principal sign-off and access to the school."
