Pepper album.

Others figure that anything even Yummy Yummy is an improvement over Bill Haley's first forays into the rock arena. Still others feel rock never did get off its knees. Ed Cassidy, the widely experienced bald-headed drummer with Spirit, a hard-hitting West Coast group, has a different point of view. He figures the golden era of pop is yet to come. "I think we're just reaching the beginning of the end result of rock," he said from Los Angeles this week.

"But it will be another couple of years before we can look back and see what it has all come to. "Of course, it's difficult to be precise because there are no yardsticks. Pop hasn't hit any peaks yet, there have only been fads. "People are digging into the music itself now, finding out things, re-creating, adapting; it all adds up to the fact that the really great horizons of rock are just becoming visible." MOST RECENTLY CASSIDY HAS CON-centrate on modern jazz. Then, realizing that rock was starting to offer more to the serious musician, he abandoned jazz.

"There is a lack of creativity, a lack of bread, and much hate and uptightness in tha jazz scene these days, with the exception of a few beautiful people such as Coltrane, Bru-beck, Monk, and Don Ellis. It's a very disturbed picture. But I was part of it, and in my way, I was as sick as the rest. There I was doing it, grooving on it, thinking it was what's happening. But it's a dead end street as a whole, the jazz idiom is very ugly now.

WEST Washington Post WASHINGTON In her autobiography, "Movin' On Up," Mahalia Jackson tells the story of how she had her one and only experience with a voice lesson. The teacher was a black operatic singer who had carved out a small concert career. The place was Chicago in 1932 when Miss Jackson was known only to a few church congregations in the Midwest. The teacher had her sing the spiritual, "Standing in the Need of Prayer." Using the fiery zeal that has always been part of her vocal art, she infused the ordinarily somber song with an infectious rhythm that caused the teacher to frown with disgust.
