The Seguin Gmtte-EnterprlM Stguln, Texas Tnurwtty, February 16,1098 Pip I Krager to conduct orchestra In New Braunfels on Sunday The Mid-Texas Symphony will welcome guest conductor Franz Anton Krager for its next performance, on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m.

at the New Braunfels Civic Center. Krager will conduct the orchestra for the performance which will feature the Mid-Texas Symphony Chorus. The chorus will present Rimer's "Requiem" in the second half of the program. The chorus is under the direction of Daniel Long. The first half will feature Beethoven's "Leonore Overture No.

3" and Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 4." Krager is music director of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, director of orchestras at the University of Houston School of Music, and director of orchestral studies for the Texas Music Festival. Hailing from Detroit, Krager received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan. In 1970, he joined Musical Youth International and, in 1978, made his European debut as conductor of MYI, winning first prize at the International Festival of Music in Copenhagen. Michelle Maddox, a junior at SHS, won a $500 scholarship in the Lions Drug Prevention Speech Contest and will be eligible for additional scholarships when she speaks at the state convention in May. Her topic was 'The Role of the Texas Legislature in Drug Prevention." This was the third year Maddox has participated in this speaking event, placing as an area, regional and district winner. Maddox is sponsored locally by the Seguin Sunset Lions Club and coached by Mary Springs, SHS speech teacher. Maddox presented her speech during the Luncheon Program before an audience of 230.

James T. Coffey, Immediate Past International President of Lions, served as the keynote speaker. Krager has toured extensively in many of the countries of Europe, the former Soviet Union, Japan, Africa, Australia, South and Central America, Mexico and Canada. In 1982, he led the Symphony Orchestra of Berlin in the Herbert von Karagan International Conduct- ing Competition, and in 1990, tt the invitation of the Soviet wthoritlei, distinguished himself the first American conductor to lead the Kazan National Philharmonic in the former USSR.

Conducting engagements havle included appearances with many Texas based orchestras, including the Mid-Texas Symphony, as well orchestras in Hawaii, California, Michigan and Missouri. Long is in his fifth season as artistic director of the Texas Bach Choir. He also serves a artistic director df the Austin Civic Orchestra and is la member of the music faculty at Trinity University. He was one of the first in the United States and the first in Texas to conduct the "Requiem." Tickets for the concert are $9 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and college students, and $3 for students through high school age.
