Democrat and Chronicle QT Rochester, N. OlJ 1965 By JOSEFH G. MOLNER, M.D ANY PICTURE TUBE 4 l' FUUV. Iff I YEA nodosum. First my doctor treated me for tonsillitis, then decided it was "strep" when I ran high temperatures.

After partial recovery I developed nodules or lumps under the skin on my legs. My doctor says not to worry. MRS. W. S.

Erythema nodosum (red, painful lumps under the skin) is believed to be related to streptococcus infection. The lumps disappear with treatment. In your case, the strep infection centered in the tonsil area, which is not unusual. Getting rid of the resultant bumps of erythema nodosum depends on subjugation of the strep infection. The treatment of the tonsillitis was also the beginning of treatment for the erythema nodosum.

fa P.M. Dear Dr. Molner: We learned two months ago that our five-year-old son has Perthes Disease. A week later he was In a brace. Our doctor said he might be in it for two to four years, and told us the bone at the hip was dead from not getting blood.

Please answer the following: 1 Could this be caused from an accident? 2 Is there a chance of malignancy? 3 Will the leg that is in the brace continue to grow? 4 Is there any exercise we can use to help the blood flow back quicker? MRS. W. This condition, or to give it its full name, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, happens from time to time with youngsters, and without fail it frightens parents. It would frighten me, too, except that I know that with proper care, the child usually recovers. Your answers are: 1 Injury of some sort is a common cause, but not necessarily a violent accident.

2 It is not a malignant condition. 3 The necrotic (destroyed) bone will be replaced by new bone, so the leg should grow to normal size. 4 No, exercise won't help. The healing process is slow and there is no way to hurry it. Naturally the brace is a nuisance, often an uncomfortable one, but taking the load off the affected bone is a vital part of the treatment.

The most important part, in fact. Dear Dr. Molner: I have been treated for erythema Wifh the A'afional League making its debut Sunday, professional jootball will be featured on the color-cover of next week's popular TV TAB which will come to you with this Sunday's expanded Democrat and Chronicle.
