BY STAFF WRITER PATTI SINGER Marcus Fugate surprised his mother with his choice of career. "I want to be a professional tennis player," the 12-year-old Perinton boy announced when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. "You do?" replied Marcia Fugate, whose youngest son then reminded her that pro tennis has been his ambition for a couple of years. Not that Marcia and her husband, Tom, couldn't see this coming. Since they put a racquet in his hand when he was about 6, Marcus has been getting better as he's gotten older. Unranked last year as an 11-year-old, Marcus is No. 2 in the boys 12-and-under division of the United States Tennis Association Eastern Section, which encompasses New York state, northern New Jersey and Greenwich, Conn. In 10 tournaments since June 1999, he has a record of 37-4. He won his past three events, twice defeating the top-ranked player in his age group. As a result, he was among 10 players from the Eastern Section selected to compete in July and August in two individual USTA national tournaments, in California and North Carolina, and one of 20 players selected for a national team event in Ohio. "It's pretty good, considering we have hundreds of kids competing," said Aaron Segal, player development coordinator for the USTA Eastern Section in Harrison, Westchester County. All of this has made Marcus" family understandably proud. "From a parent's standpoint, this is pretty positive," says Tom Fugate, director of export regulations at Eastman Kodak Co. He's ranked second in his age group in the eastern region, but has managed to defeat the top-ranked player twice in recent tournaments. of kids are doing all kinds of stuff. He opted to play tennis." Well, he had some encouragement. Both Tom and Marcia are avid players; she competed in a national tournament last summer. They would take Marcus and his older brother, Chip, when they went to play with friends. It wasn't long before both boys were playing, but Marcus didn't have a lot of fun at first 1 .-:: -. - I Gregory Backus School: Caledonia-Mumford High School. Lives in: Mumford. "Then I cooled off." Marcus also plays soccer and wants to try out for the football team at Martha Brown Middle School in the fall, when he'll be a seventh-grader. He says his parents aren't pushing him into tennis, but he counts on their support, particularly in tournaments. "When I get down, I look to my parents. They give me confidence. I start to play a little better." Those who track young tennis players say it's too soon to predict his future, but they say Marcus is a good athlete who learns quickly. "His best strength is he's a very good competitor," said Billy Nealon, head professional at the Tennis Club of Rochester in Pitts-ford, who teaches Marcus in a group of young players. "He has what I consider a fairly relaxed attitude for a competitive player. He doesn't get angry. He lets the mistakes roll off his back quite well." "A lot of times in tennis, you get brats," said Darren Davis, co-owner of Stringers, a tennis shop in Henrietta. "Marcus is the kind of kid you fall in love with. He's not really outspoken, but he's easy to talk to. He's very thankful, always thanking people." Aware of the image of many tennis players, Marcus says he doesn't brag about his success. Oh, maybe to Chip, who exacts revenge on the basketball court. But Marcus says he respects his opponents. He seemed uncomfortable the day last summer that he beat one of his parents' friends at the annual tournament organized by people who play regularly at Genesee Valley Park. "He said, 'Why did you do that, why did you let me beat you?' " recalled Selwyn Mitchell. The 41-year-old figured he'd have no trouble beating "the kid," but lost in straight sets. "For a good half-hour, he sat there ... thinking I had allowed him to beat me," Mitchell said. "That was not the case. Everything I brought to him, he brought more." Marcus' triumph wasn't without irony. "No one would play with him when he couldn't play," Marcia said with a smile. "Now, V for high school graduation from area schools.
