1 a a DEMOCRAT AND A.M. DIGEST Errant driver causes crash An Ontario County woman remained hospitalized yesterday from a head-on crash on the Inner Loop caused when she drove the wrong way. Beverly Blondell, 64, of Canandaigua, suffered a broken leg or ankle, state police said. She was in satisfactory condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. Blondell had been headed east in the westbound lanes when her car struck a westbound car.

The accident occurred between the exits for Monroe Avenue and Union Street about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday. An 8-year-old boy who was in her car was taken to Strong for observation, then released. Troopers would not release his name but said he was Blondell's grandson. The driver of the westbound car, Donald Thompson, 21, of Rochester, was taken to Strong for treatment of an injured ankle, then released.

Traffic citations are pending. Nader official urges reforms A representative of Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader's national campaign made a stop in Rochester yesterday, promoting local Green Party candidates and urging campaign finance reform. Robert Lion, Nader's spokesman for campaign finance reform, held a news conference yesterday at Washington Square Park in downtown Rochester, where bars of corporate influence clean-up soap were handed out. Lion stood in front of the Clean Money Express, a large balloon in the shape of a truck. "It represents the truckloads of money thrown at candidates," said Lion.

Eve Hawkins, the party's candidate for the 28th Congressional District, criticized the Democrats for running a campaign toward the center and said that's why some liberal Democrats are supporting the Green Party. Jon Greenbaum, the party's candidate for the 131st Assembly District, said that candidates from the two major parties were preoccupied with raising money. "Our legislators ought to be legislating, not fund-raising," he said. Trial lawyer out of hospital Defense lawyer D. Michael Murray, whose illness delayed the capital murder trial of John F.

Owens, has been released from a hospital and is feeling better. Murray, who was discharged Monday from United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, was suffering from pneumonia and an electrolyte imbalance, he said Tuesday. Although physicians suspected a possible ministroke, they found no evidence of one. Murray became ill Oct. 16, causing jury selection in Owens' trial to be delayed until Jan.

10. Owens, 38, of 73 Walnut is charged with first- and seconddegree murder in the rape and strangling of two women in Rochester last year. Prosecutors have declared that they'll seek the death penalty for Owens if he is convicted of first-degree murder. Grants will aid cancer screening The state announced yesterday the award of $227,298 in grants that will help promote early detection of breast and cervical cancer and provide uninsured and low-income women with necessary cancer screenings in western New York. The New York Healthy Women's Partnerships, a joint effort by county and state health officials, hospitals and local service agencies, is expected to serve more than 60,000 low-income women and those with inadequate or no health insurance.

The funding breakdown: Cayuga County Health Department, County Community Health Services, Seneca County Health Department, and Wayne County Public Health Services, $44,486. State funds will help buy buses The Genesee Regional CHRONICLE NOV. 3, 2000 Transportation Authority in Rochester will receive $456,000 in state funds to help purchase transit buses as part of a state effort to improve public transportation. The New York Transit Dedicated Fund will provide $12 million to help local transit agencies across the state make capital improvements and purchases, Gov. George Pataki said yesterday.

The Transit Dedicated Fund has funded more than 100 buses with $54 million in state aid since 1995. This year's funds were awarded to 15 cities and will fund about 22 buses.
