Ji LI DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE "SUNDAY, MARCH 21,1999 9D RUNNING REPORT Gordon master of tire use at Darlington Gage captures Runnin' 0' the Green The Chili resident holds ofTTodd Reeser in an thilling finish. Renee Rombaut wins women's race. onds in front of defending race champ and friend Beth DeCiantis. "I just tried to focus and run my own race," said Rombaut, a first-time winner of the race. "I was not expecting to win at alL I just tried to go out fast and run for myself.

"I love this race. It gets you psyched up for the rest of the races." Mark Martin, whose seven victories last season were second only to Gordon's record-tying run of 13, is another tire watcher. He says a driver can notice a difference after just a few laps. "The asphalt here is just tremendously abrasive," he said. "They just go away in a hurry, lap after lap." Kenseth routs field in Busch race: Matt Kenseth, who chased Dale Earnhardt Jr.

all last season in the NASCAR Busch series championship race, routed him and the rest of the field yesterday in the Diamond Hill 200 at Darlington Raceway. Ironically, Kenseth succeeded the injured Bobby Labonte as champion of the race. Labonte could not run because he broke his shoulder in a practice crash Friday, and will be relieved by Kenseth today in the TranSouth 400. Kenseth, a third-year driver from Cambridge, said practicing yesterday morning in the Joe Gibbs Racing Pontiac he will drive today in the Winston Cup race, helped him to his easy victory. "I was able to learn some things about what the race track was doing, and Bobby gave me a few tips," Kenseth said.

"I just hope I can go out and do the best for them tomorrow." Beyond a caution flag that hurt many of the contenders, Kenseth didn't need much help to become the fifth different winner in as many Busch events this season. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DARLINGTON, S.C. The winner of the TranSouth 400 probably will be the driver who makes the best use of his AUlO r3Cing tires, and no one is better at that than Jeff Gordon. With five victories in his last seven starts at Darlington Raceway and the top starting position today, the Winston Cup champion is an overwhelming favorite to win for the third time this year. The key to Gordon's success at "the track too tough to tame" is knowing he will be there at the end.

"This place is all about carrying speed for 50 or 60 laps on old tires," Gordon said. "The pace slows down tremendously." He realizes that more than most, and most recently demonstrated his strategy for attacking the track last Labor Day weekend. Late in the Southern 500, Gordon twice ran down Jeff Burton from far behind, bettering his own record by winning the race a fourth straight time. "It's all about not burning up your tires and trying to hit your marks every lap," Gordon said of the consistent pace and route he maintains all the way around the 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval. "Our typical strategy here is not to be the fastest car on new tires but try to be the fastest car from halfway to the end of a long green-flag rua" 'iliS Yankees al Blue Jays Sky Dome) rwo games 625-27 Yankees at Orioles iCamden Yards) three games f2-4 Orioles at Yankees (Yankee Stadium) three games 723-25 NYCYankee (lndians)Shea (Cubs) Stadiums 728-31 ChicagoWngley Field (MelslComiskey Park (Yankees) 730-81 Yankees at Red Sox (Fenway Park) Iwo games 730-86 Southern Suing (Atlanta.

Marc Gage of Chili held off Pitts-ford's Todd Reeser to win the Runnin 0' the Green 5-mile race in downtown Gage Rochester. Gaee finished in 24 minutes, 54 seconds just a step ahead of Reeser in 24:55. Gage broke the course record of 25:18 set last year by Scott Bagley.
