WEST LAFAYETTE Now that the cold weather's arrived, do you have any plans for this winter? Ah, yes the old, sit on the couch after dinner and watch TV bit. Have you ever thought that maybe you watch too much TV and that you'd like to do something different with your time? Like go back to school? Wait! Don't panic. If you've been out of school for awhile, you may be thinking there's nothing up there in your brain except cobwebs and some rusty old machinery. Well, getting your brain restarted is a lot like restarting a rusty old car." It can be done and you can have fun doing it. Purdue University offers a course specifically designed for people who have been out of school for awhile.

GS 290X, How To Survive at College, is a 3-credit-hour course designed expressly for adults who want to get their brains working again. It meets from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays. The next session begins Jan. 13 and runs through May 5.

Most of the people who take the course are terrified at the prospect of taking a college level course, so if the thought of taking a class at Purdue makes you break out into a cold sweat, this is the class for you. The course is a hands-on class where students spend their time listening to short lectures, then practicing the skills that are taught. They see motivational movies to give them reasons to return to school, play games to work on their problem-solving and vocabulary skills, and read the novel "Dances With Wolves" to work on reading skills. They also take lots of tests (just for the fun of it) to improve their self- confidence and speed. The theme of the course is that learning is fun.

If you've had a bad experience with education in the past, it might be worth your while to check this course out to see what it can do for you. The instructor, Sara Jane Should You Go Back To School? Directions: Circle if your answer is true; is your answer is false. 1.1 watch too much TV. TF 2. There aren't enough challenges in my life.

TF 3.1 have a good mind, but I don't use it. 4.1 find mysell being envious of people who try to better themselves. TF 5. I'm not as happy with my life as I could be. 6.

I'd like to make some new friends, TF 7. I've always thought that someday I'd get a college education. 8.1 want to accomplish something. 9. I'd like to take a class that's TF 10.1 want to keep myself young and mentally healthy.

TF If you answered "true" to more than five of these statements, you can do something about it now. This spring, Purdue University offers an evening course for adults who want to go back to school: GS 290X How to Survive at College. GS 290X will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 13 to May 5.

Students will receive three academic credits for the course. To enroll, call the Admissions Office at Purdue, (765) 494-1776. Coffman, has taught study skills at Purdue for 25 years. She is also the author of the course text. To find out more about the course, call her at (765) 494-5110.

Going back to school after you've been out for awhile might; be a scary proposition. But it sure beats spending the winter sitting on the couch watching TV. Continued from Page A6 Milburn, Zac C. Smith and Annalisa C. Vandenham.
