Sendmail, written by a Berkeley programmer, allows the transfer of electronic mail from machine to machine. The finger program allows the user to obtain information about other users on a network.

After the worm program alerted computer programmers to the security holes in the two programs, both sendmail and finger were immediately fixed. "As a result of the worm program," Guidoboni asked, "wasn't the sendmail program made a little better? And the same with the finger program?" "Yes," Bostic responded. Bostic also said that in October 1988, Morris discovered a dangerous security flaw in another aspect of Unix and brought it to computer scientists' attention. week, ambulance patients will be read a four-sentence warning telling why they might not be taken to the Syracuse-area hospital of their choice. The lawyer for the defendant, Robert Tappan Morris, 25, said in his opening statement in federal court last week that he planned to establish that his client is a man dedicated to the field of computer "security, but that he had made a critical error in the program, called a virus or worm, that was intended as a harmless exercise. While Morris has pleaded innocent, his lawyer, Thomas A. Gui- doboni, has not disputed the fact that the defendant was the person who wrote the program released in the network in November 1988.

But Guidoboni contends that by doing so, Morris heightened security awareness in the commuter industry.
