help to expand plant Decorative Precast Stone Concrete Shawndra Number of workers to nearly double By Bob Bickel Democrat and Chronicle LIMA Shawndra Products a manufacturer of industrial filter housings and components, has gotten help from the state Job Development Authority, through the Livingston County Economic Development Office, for an addition to its Lima plant. Founded by three Rochester men Douglas Lynch, Ralph Sandle Jr. and Kenneth Keller in a small building in Lima in 1982, Shawndra prospered and in developing this company from the ground up in less than a decade," Rountree said. "We are very pleased to have a firm of this caliber in Livingston County and we look forward to working with them in continuing their growth." "The Livingston people eve worked with have been fine," said Lynch. "They are down-to-earth people who have been more than cooperative; super, in fact." The Shawndra addition was the fifth this year to include capital provided through the state authority-county economic development program cooperation.

The previous four projects were for Forbes Products, Dansville: UR grad gives a gift in 1986 built a plant in the Slocum Industrial Park on Rochester Street. The new $260,000, square-foot addition more than doubles the size of the 1986 plant and is expected to add 18 jobs over the next three years to the present work force of 21, according to Patrick Rountree, county economic development officer. Both the original plant and the expansion included financing from Marine Midland Bank and the state authority. Avon Industries, a non-profit development group in Avon, sponsored the original low-interest loan from the authority, while the Livingston County Development Corp. sponsored the Schlegel Moretz has demonstrated her commitment to helping our university stand and shine." Construction of the new, four-floor, building probably will start in late spring, but no completion date has been set, said university spokeswoman Jan Fitzpatrick.

The building will be placed on Eastman Quadrangle, opposite Strong Auditorium. It will complete the pattern of buildings laid out in architectural plans in the 1920s for the founding of the River Pamniift in Helen Moretz 193a Those plans called for a seventh building across from Strong Auditorium to complete symmetry for the Eastman Quadrangle. But that seventh building wasn't constructed because of cost. The business school will occupy the new building and continue to use Dewey Hall, Fitzpatrick said. The architectural firm designing the huilding is the Boston-based firm of Shepley, Bulfinch, Rich- second, with Rountree's office preparing the application.

The Shawndra growth followed a steady demand for the filtering of air, gas and liquids used in the manufacture of products as diverse as cement and disposable diapers. The current market includes Canada, and Shawndra has hopes of expanding into other foreign markets. Lynch is president and Keller is vice president. Sales have doubled about every two years, and are expected to continue at that pace, said Rountree. "Doug (Lynch) and Ken (Keller) have done an excellent job in the millions ardson and Abbott.

The last major building constructed on the campus was a $12.5 million computer science center that opened two years ago. The school also is now building new dormitories downtown for students at the Eastman School of Music.
