COLLEGES BE SUNDAY DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. ROCHESTER. N.Y.. NOVEMBER 5. 1989 Defense, Scharr lead SU, 23-11 Ithaca routs Cortland, 28-0, to boost post-season hopes A IK fc i rv Scharr's presence was immediately felt in the second half.

On his second series, he drove the Orange 81 yards in five plays with Duane Kinnon scoring on a one-yard plunge to give SU a 10-5 lead. On his next possession, Scharr moved SU into BC territory but had to leave the game briefly when he reinjured his bruised left shoulder. McDonald came in and promptly made a bad pitch to Michael Owens and Labbe recovered at the SU 45. SU held but Lowe kicked a career-best 52-yard field goal to make it 10-8. On SU's next play, Owens (21 carries, 90 yards) fumbled and BC's Ed Duran recovered at the SU 12.

Again, the defense held and Lowe kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Eagles an 11-10 lead with :18 left in the third. Scharr then took charge. He marched the Orange 65 yards in six plays to the winning touchdown, hitting Rob Moore with a nine-yard scoring strike. The touchdown gave Moore an SU record 18 for his career. Scharr was sacked on a two-point conversion attempt leaving the score 16-11.

The defense followed with another huge effort BC moved to a first-and-goal at the eight and on second down, scored an apparent go-ahead TD with 6:57 left. However, the officials ruled that Cherry had stepped out of bounds before he caught the ball, nullifying the play. On third down, Bary made a great play to deflect a pass in the end zone to Cherry. Hicks argued for a pass interference penalty and was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed the ball back to the 26. DeRiggi then blocked Lowe's 42-yard field-goal attempt.

Scharr came on the field and capped a 75-yard, eight-play drive with a beautifully lofted 20-yard TD pass to Moore (five catches, 114 yards) to ice the game. EAST F00TDALL Blocked punt helps Dartmouth slip by Columbia, 13-12 The Associated Press NEW YORK Robert Birge blocked a punt at the Columbia 13 with 1:40 remaining and Karl Romero kicked a 19-yard field goal with 16 seconds left yesterday to give Dartmouth a 13-12 victory over the Lions. Birge, a defensive back, got both hands on Matt Pollard's punt and then recovered the ball. Dartmouth took over and Clark gained four yards on third-and-three, moving the ball to the two with :19 remaining. Dartmouth called time and Columbia called time twice more before Romero kicked his second field goal of the game.

Former University of Rochester Coach Ray Tellier has yet to win a game with Columbia (0-5 in the Ivy League, 0-8 overall). The Lions have won only two of their past 62 and have lost 17 of their past 18 games against Dartmouth since 1971. The lone exception was a 17-17 tie in 1983. The Big Green (2-4, 3-5) have won their past two games at Columbia by a total of three points. Yale 34, Cornell 19 NEW HAVEN, Conn.

Cornell (1-3, 3-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but Yale came back to score 17 straight points in the second quarter. Kehler started the scoring with a two-yard run and threw a five-yard pass to Chris Kouri for another score. "That ball is precious to our people and it's something he's dreamed of.

He's come a long way in this program." As has been the case all year in the Dome, the SU offense sputtered badly, especially in the first half. BQ took a 5-3 lead into the locker room at halftime but its lead could have been much bigger. "With the pressure our defense was under and where we gave them (BC) the ball, for us to keep them out of the end zone was unbelievable," MacPherson said. Said DeRiggi: "Everyone did a great job. The secondary did a great job, our contain men were outstanding and so were the linebackers.

Everyone did their jobs. I felt I had a lot of big plays but I still have to touch up on a lot of things. It was. the biggest game I've played." It afio was one of the biggest games Schatt has played. Scharr was benched in favor of Mark McDonald but when McDonald struggled in the first half, MacPherson turned to Scharr.

"As we were coming in at the half, he (MacPherson) just told me to 'Get loose because you're going Scharr said. "I felt confident but I thought Mark was playing pretty well when he was in there. He had a couple of things happen like the fumble and the interception, but I thought Mark moved the team pretty well." Not well enough. UPDATE Pearson's OT goal carries RIT hockey past Elmira, 5-4 Democrat and Chronicle The Rochester Institute of Technology's hockey team (3-1) won its tournament championship with a 5-4 double-overtime victory over Elmira College (2-1) last night at Ritter Arena. Phil Hammel, a former three-sport high school star at Attica, rolled up 180 yards and a touchdown with his eight catches, and the Bombers ripped the nation's third-best yardage defense for 504 yards. The Bombers, who had been averaging 125 passing yards a game with their option-dominated offense, rolled up 241 on a sunny, crisp afternoon as Tom Pasquale completed 11 of 21 attempts. "I guess they underestimated our passing game and decided to key on our run and the option game," said freshman Jeff Wittman (Gates-Chili), who scored the day's final TD on a five-yard run. But Cortland didn't have much luck stopping that running game either. Fullback Keith Molinich (Pittsford Sutherland) rolled 57 yards around the left side for a score against an ill-timed middle blitz on Ithaca's seventh play of the day.

The points were all the Bombers would need, but the Pasquale-to-Hammel combination would provide highlights for the rest of the Parents Weekend afternoon. First, they teamed on a 40-yard bomb late in the first quarter that eventually led to a missed field goal. Then they ran essentially the same down-the-middle play about 3:30 before the half. This time, the ball was thrown high and slightly short, but Hammel, who began the day with 27 catches for the year, came back for it and outjumped Ted Fox and Steve McCormick for a 57-yard gain. "1 didn't even see it until it started coming down because the sun was in my eyes.

But it was a great throw," he said. Ithaca's longest pass play of the season set up an even better Pasquale-to-Hammel collaboration with 1:12 left in the half. downs as the Tigers (5-0, 6-1-1) stayed unbeaten in the Ivy League. Punting problems for Penn (2-2, 4-3) set up two of the Tigers' scores en route to a 20-0 halftime lead. By John Moriello Democrat and Chronicle ITHACA Ken Hammel reduced eight mostly exciting catches to as many words.

"They threw to me and I caught it," the junior split end said. Oh, if only life for Ithaca College were always so simple. With their 28-0 victory over Cortland before 10,051 fans at South Hill Field yesterday, the Bombers have created a very thorny situation when it comes to ranking Division III football teams and figuring post-season berths. The Bombers control their own destiny, but only to a certain extent. Ithaca is 7-2 headed into next week's game at Washington Jefferson, which is sitting at 7-1 after a 17-7 loss to Carnegie-Mellon.

With a victory there, the Bombers would seemingly force the NCAA to invite them to the 16-team playoffs. However, Cortland is sitting at 8-1, and Union, St. John's and a whole bunch of small schools in the Northeast are pointing to their own sparkling records. Maybe a few of them should point to the strength of their schedule or lack thereof. "The selectors count wins and losses," Ithaca Coach Jim Butterfield said, "but when we can play an American International (a 6-2 Division II team) 7-6 and have an opportunity to win, it's not for me to say we lost to them." That game and a 17-10 loss to Alfred in September are the two pocks on Ithaca's record.

Yesterday, though, the Bombers inflicted some damage of their own on the Red Dragons, the No. 1 Division III team in the Lambert Poll. The Associated Press Al Rosier of Dartmouth is stopped short by Columbia's Galen Snyder. Lehigh in the Colonial League. The Red Raiders (1-2, 4-5) caused six Lehigh turnovers, including two fumbles and four interceptions.
