DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE MARCH. 11, 1999 Briefs Renovation possible at Robach center The Roger Robach Community Center could get renovated if Monroe County lawmakers approve money for a design in April. The $50,000 contract for Bero Associates of Rochester would be to design work that would fix the water damage to the center at Ontario Beach Park. It would also fund a study to see whether the second floor of the building could be rehabilitated and made usable by the handicapped. Farmland advocate gives speech today Author and farmland protection advocate Steven McFadden will make a presentation and do a book signing at 7 p.m.

today at Barnes Noble, Pittsford Plaza. The free talk, "The Farms of Tomorrow," is sponsored by Seeking Common Ground, a communitysupported organic farm in Mendon. McFadden, the author of six nonfiction books, said farming culture "is mutating at warp speed," as it increasingly embraces pesticides, chemical fertilizers, irradiation and genetic engineering. One antidote, he suggests: community farms, supported by nearby cities and towns. There are about 1,000 such "community supported agriculture groups" in the United States up from 60 in 1990.
