G.E. Schmitt Gilbert E. Schmitt, well known Seguin native, retired June 1 as Chief Engineer and Assistant General Manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority. He has been retained as a con- for the LCRA for the reminder of this year. After the first of next year, he may be available for limited consulting services in the field In which he has spent all of his professional life.

has three brothers still living in Seguin. They are Hugo G. of 1015 E. Mountain; Monroe W. of 958 E.

College and Walter of 223 W. TerrelL These three brothers often refer to Gilbert their "baby brother." He and his wife, Dean, live in Austin and their one daughter, rtt (Mrs. Henry A. Bunting, ffl) and family live in Dallas. The grandaughter, Denise, is in the sixth grade and grandson, Mike, to in the fourth grade.

Schmitt was born on a farm three miles north of Seguin. He his ABC'js and multiplication tables by an oil lamp and hept warm in the winter by the side of a wood stove. His firstthreeschoolyearswere in Laubach School, a seven- grade, one teacher rural school- there was no electricity anywhere. Entering Seguin Public School In the fourth grade, he continued his studies until graduation in 1924. By this time, he was determined to become anelectrical engineer and enter the electric utility field to bring adequate and reliable electric service to the people of his State at a reasonable cost.

Schmitt began this personal pursuit by entering the University of Texas in 1924. He received his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering in (928. Since that time, he feels that he has achieved many of his childhood dreams, as adequate and reliable ele.ctric,^i|vice ha? been available to of people in this part of Texas during the past decade. While new problems have been created by unrealistic environmental laws and edicts, and by a shortage of fuel for fossil fuel generating plants, these problems can and will be solved as soon as the public endorses the use of nuclear energy and other types for electric power generation.

Professional History Some of the accomplishments of Gilbert E. Schmitt since his graduation from UT are listed in the following brief outline of his professional history: In 1928, after graduation, he joined the engineering staff of the Central Power and Light Company and served as Resident Engineer during the construction of hydroelectric plants on Devils River near Del Rio. Resigning this position in 1939,, he became associated with the LCRA to act as a consultant to the then existing Engineering Division. In 1941, he was appointed Chief Engineer and in 1943, he assumed the additional duties of Asst. General Manager.

His achievements while in this position with the LCRA involved many far-reaching engineering projects. He was responsible for the engineering concept to install at Buchanan Dam in 1949 the FIRST pump-back unit in the nation and he subsequently prepared a publication, A.I.E.E. Paper No. 49-26, which is used often as reference in obtaining facts for other studies. Sehmitt has been a prominent leader since 1941 in organizing the South Texas and the Texas Interconnected Systems, as well as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

These efforts have resulted in a closely knit organization of all intrastate electric systems in Texas which has received national recognition for its economical and reliable operation. in addition to his professional life in the field of electrical engineering, Schmitt has served as Vice President of the Austin Chamber of Commerce. As Vice President of Traffic and Transportation, he was a leader in the activities which resulted in the construction of the new Austin Municipal Air Terminal. He has long been included in the "Who's Who in Engineering," and was also included in the 12th Edition of "Who's Who in the South and Southwest" (1917-1972). He is a Registered Professional Kngineer and a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

This is but a partial list of the organizations in which Seguin's son has played an important part. In his private life he is a mem- oer of kjwanis Inter national and a deacon in the University Avenue Church of Christ in Austin.
