gfatlg REINHARD SHARP, JFKIDAY. JANUABY 20, 1890. THEIR LAST SLEEP. The Wall of a Church in Course of Erection PALLS WITH TERRIBLE EFFECT. It CnubM Into Three-Story Dwelling.

Brlncinc Death to Two Bright Tonne Were Borrlblj Taw Demolition of HOUM Killed Injured. NEW YOKE, Jan. awoke yeaterday morning to find that the gale which raged throughout the night had resulted in an appalling calamity in ito midst. A new Presbyterian church, of which the Eev. Dr.

Lewis B. Foote is pastor, has been in course of erection at No. 296Throop avenue, corner of Willoughby avenue. Although apparently the work was well doue, it had not advanced sufficiently to withstand the high wind. At 4:85 a.

m. one of the brick walls, after swaying for several minutes, fell with a great crash which awoke the en- tile neighborhood. The immense mass fell fairly upon a three story frame dwelling which adjoined the church, and was tenanted by the Mott and Purdy families, numbering altogether seven persons. They were Mrs. Emma J.

Purdy, aged 40; Hary Purdy, aged 18; Caroline? Purdy, aged 16; David Purdy, aged li. Mrs. Caroline Molt, aged 75; Sarah Mott, aged 45: Richard A. Poole, aged 03. AU Were Anleep.

Although the families had been much disturbed by the gale during the night, all were asleep when the disaster occurred. They were aroused by a tremendous noise. They heard the walls crash, saw the plaster fall, and that the house was trembling on its foundations. Those in the back parlor, which was not shaken so badly, started to es- eape. How they escaped is not yet known, for within a minute after UK- first crash the house fell.

The boy and girl in the front parlor were either not awakened by the noise or had no chance to escape, for their dead bodies, horribly mangled, were found in the ruins. The others were more or Jess injured. but none fatally. The dead girl was employed as a typewriter and was a favorite among her friends in the neighborhood. '1 he boy David was regarded as particularly blight and was to have graduated from Grammar school No.

25 in February next. As soon as the terrible crash was heard people began to flock to the scene, aud several hundred were soon on the spot, appalled by the scene and by the cries of the entombed victims who had not suffered death. The Demolition Complete. The demolition of the bouse was complete, but one bedroom was fully exposed to view, and in this could be seen the body of Mary Purdy, who had been crushed beneath a mass of debris. The police and firemen, who had been summoned at once, arrived in a few minutes, and began the work of rescuing the living and bringing out the dead.

The first person they discovered was Mrs. Emma Purdy, who lay in bed, BO badly crushed that she was unable to speak. She was quickly and tenderly conveyed from the ruin. Mary Purdy's body was taken out and hud upon the sidewalk, covered with the blankets of her own bed. She was a prepossessing girl, and is said to have been engaged to be married.

He Saw It The first alarm of the calamity was given by John Moore, a night watch man, who witnessed it. He was within half a block of the church at the time. He noticed that the church wall seemed to be swaying, and before he could make up his mind whether the impression was imaginary the mass of brick came down squarely upon the adjoining roof, lie ran toward the spot shouting fire, while the shrieks of the entombed reached his ears from the ruin, lie had to wait until the police and firemen arrived, when he assisted in the work of rescue. The Killed and Injured. Purdy, aged 18; David Purdy, aged 14.

Caroline Mott, shoulder hart; Miss Sarah Mott, her daughter, out about the head; Mrs. Emma J. Purdy, a widow, and mother of the two few scratches, suffering much from the shock; Carrie, her daughter; Richard A. Poole, cousin of Mrs. Purdy, back and strained and shoulders injured.

The llritlcb Fleet at Zanzibar. ZAMUBAB, Jan. British men-of-war have arrived at Zanzibar and others are expected. There is great excitement over the presence of this large fleet. Surmises are rife as to its object, but the prevailing opinion is that it is destined for the coast of Mozambique, to put a stop to Portuguese aggression and protect British interests in the interior.

The fleet is under sealed orders, and awaits final dispatches from London. It is generally believed that in the absence of satisfactory assurances from Lisbon it will be ordered to proceed to occupy Delagoa Tbe Kew Treaty. OTTAWA, Ont, Jan. confidential copy of the proposed extradition treaty tietweeu the United States and Great Britain has been received by the minister of justice. The scope of the proposed treaty is very wide in contrast with the treaty of 1842, which contains only four offenses.

If the pending treaty is adopted legislation by the Dominion parliament will be necessary to bring Canada under its provisions. The Ctxmntauqoa Aaaembly. BOCBESTEK, N. Jan. au- nual meeting of the board of trustees of the Chauuiuuua assembly is in at Power's hotel.

The North American Review for January, which begins the one hundred and ittieth volume of that sterling periodical, one of the most important numbers ever issued. The first fifty four pages are oc- nipied by a discussion on Free Trade or Protection, in which tbe two sides of the question are ab'ly and brilliantly presented by the Rijrht Hon. William E. Gladstone and Hon. James 6.

Biaino. Mr. Elaine's contribution is an answer to Mr. Gladstone's, and is published by special per- mision of tbe latter at the same time with ais own. The two together make a feature which in brilliancy has never been surpassed, if, indeed, it has ever beon equaled, in tbe history of periodical literature.

That it will attract the widest attention on both sides of the Atlantic it is needless to say. Certainly it forms a splendid opening of the new volnme, aud shows that The Review under the present management is amply fuiailing the promises it has made. Further contributions on the same subject are promised in future numbers. As so mach space is occupied by this great discussion, sixteen peges have been added to this number of Tbe Review (making one hundred and forty-four pages in all), in order that a jreat variety of other interesting matter may be presented to the reader.
