MIDMGHT KDKA News; Music WCAE News; News. care 124 The Brighter Side By DAMON RDNYON three times before 1 made up my mind that she is good, but she has no squawk coming about my delay as I was fifteen years of more Ing out a verdict on Sophie. I said Miss Knight reminded me of Mildred Bailey.

"Generally those singing dames remind you of Bee Palmer," mented someone. "Miss Bailey reminded me of Miss Palmer," 1 said with dignity. Miss Knight, of course, is Just a Lucy-come-lalely compared to Sophie but like Sophie she is a stylist, which makes for great success in cafe singing, and that is the sole field I am covering In this essay, Run-of-mill cafe singers are a shilling a satchel full but the stylists who are also drawing cards like Sophie and Hildegrade get around $35000 per week nowadays. Sophie is the idol of the masses and Hllde- grade, the favorite of the classes. Bee Palmer probably got $1500 per week In her day and that was comparable in money value then to the $3500 of today.

I reckon when all is said and done that Helen oMrgan, dead this long time now, was one of the very great est of all the female cafe singers that ever lived In drawing power and earning capacity, even with the difference in the times considered. She usually took a percentage against a guarantee and $5000 weeks wehe common to her. She was indeed one of the most remarkable ityllsts in her profession. However, there were times when even she did not draw, as for instance when she was doubling from 'Show Boat" In Detroit Into Bert Moss' 2-2 Charlotte club in the Ad- dlson hotel. The customers remained away with extraordinary fervor.

At the close of a week's engagement, Bert owed Helen $1500 on her salary and Helen owed the establishment $500 for refreshments. tt. 848 Street OAlBTTB Ml CtfCtlladon ot per month three months months per year Helen knew the circumstances of he management so she told Bert if he would call off the $500, she would call off the $1500. Which reminds me of the time Tucker was working for Ben Marden for $2,000 per week and finished the first week owing the joint $5000 as a result of series of ill-calculated mathematical experiments in the gaming room. But Soph had drawn so much irade Ben cancelled the obligation in toto and raised her salary to $5000 a week.

Of course that was when Tucker! was and less prudent than she is today. In her late 50's, "The Last of the Red Hot Mammas" is the entertainment wonder of the age Tucker, Hildegrade and Martha Raye are perhaps the highest salaried and biggest cafe draws of the past twenty years. Raye gets $5000 a week. Frances Faye is close up there. Lena oHrne and Ella Lagan are very big any time they want to play tne cares.

Gertrude Nissen and Ethel Merman who were both cafe singers before they went into musical comedy could'command enormous salaries if they wanted to return to the nocturnal traps. So could Dorothy Lamour, of course, with or without wrapper. She sang in the Stork Club when Sherman Billingsley had that kind of entertainment there. For a long time there was a rash of so-called society singers in the cafes, but only one or two of them were accounted real draws. Eve.

Symington was perhaps best and Adelaide Moffat next. The former got $1500 a week In the East Side Spots for awhile. Libby Holman was a cafe singer of considerable fame and ability before she married into the Raynolds millions. Marion Harris, Irene Bordoni, Ruth Etting, Norma Terris, Ethel Shutta, Tamara, Lucienne Boyer, Ethel Waters, Lillian Carmen, Terry Lawlor, Dolores Reade, Carol Bruce, Wini Shaw, the Frazee Sisters, Marion Chase, Irene Manning, Gragie Barrie, Cass Daley, June Pickens, Kitty Carlisle, Jane Frohman and Blossom Seeley were cafe singers, past and present. Of course Harris, Bordoni, Boyer, Seeley and Waters must be rated among the great stylists of all time.

But there was one other who stands out in my memory, a wispy little thing named Florence Mills who was something to remember. I think she may have been greatest of all the premicophone cafe singers of my experience on Broadway. I make a big distinction between the mikes and the pre-mikes. I fear that some of the mikes of today would have had a tough time getting by in the pre-mike period. The British De Haviland Mosquito bomber held the second lowest casualty rate from direct enemy action during the war.

Brush up on your French. A chan- toosy, pronounced chanteuse, is a female singer of songs and Soph la surely the dean in that department in the whole world. The vote on this was unanimous Eve when we finally took up the topic of cafe canaries, a discussion I precipitated by expressing the opinion that 3 real good one is a lissome blonde lassie with a gentle little voice and a face mother would noti mind having brought home to her, by the name of Evelyn Knight. She sings in the Blue Angel, gaff I will probably be accused of fronting for if 1 go there my often- er to see my currently favorite comic, Corey.
