By the 1964-65 academic year the university's needs for additional operating income will total $3,017,000 annually.

The university foresees an increase of $2,063,000, but feels it must raise the $954,000 difference from new sources. The new sources: at least half of it from increased contributions from alumni, corporations and non-alumni friends. Allyn said this year's number of gifts to date total 6,915, com pared with 7,712 for all of last year. The average gift of about $20 is $6 higher than a year ago. In addition to the direct con- tributions, the university stands a chance of earning a "challenge gift" pledged by an I anonymous alumnus.

The challenge works this way: $300 of it will be given for each percentage point by which a solicitation division increases its participation; $400 will be given for each dollar increase in division gifts, and $50 for each percentage participation increase and dollar gift increase of each of the alumni regional clubs. The 24 regional clubs in the East and Midwest and the various divisions so far have col lected $23,900 of the $50,000. The denial was in response to a charge by Norman Granz, manager of singer Ella Fitzgerald, which was made in a full-page advertisement in the Dec. 30, 1959, issue of Variety, show busines trade paper.

Granz had charged that Miss Fitzgerald's guitarist, who is white, was permitted to accompany the singer on the company's recent "Tribute to Gershwin" show with the understanding that he would not be on camera at any time. Granz said Barry Wood, producer of the show, had told him that this would be in accord with the policy of the Bell company, which, Granz said, "never allows a mixed group to be on its show." Wood was unavailable for comment. But a spokesman for the company, in denying Granz's charge, said white and Negro performers had appeared on the show together on "at least half the shows." The spokesman said the company was "surprised'' at the charge, which, he said, had no basis in fact. "On the program in question, for example," the spokesman said, "there were both Negro and white artists on camera together at the beginning of the program." The National Broadcasting on whose television network the "Bell Telephone Hour" appears, declined comment on Granz's charges. preuicuon mat mere ii oe more situation comedies in the fall and a cutback in mysteries and Westerns.
