A problem of great interest in physics and astronomy, on which Tyndall, Lord Rooso and Professor Langley labored in vain, has been solved, and' trustworthy evidence at last been obtained as to tho thermal value of moonlight. This has been accomplished by Mr.

C. V. Boys, ono of the professors at South Kensington, who, by means of his quartz filaments has produced a thermopile of almost incredible delicacy. By this apparatus he can render sensible tho heat of a candle up to the distance of mile and three-quarters, and by directing tho minute disk of the instrument to the moon ho has shown that tho warmth received from its reflected light is equal to that given out by a candle at twenty-one feet distance. The result accords with tho anticipations of Professor Smyth.

Ho never earned more than $15 a week until ho had passed GO years of ago, and during his married life his wife had earned more than ho had. "Well, it says pumpkin and see hero!" Her little girl had torn off the outside paper and ou that next the can was a picture a squash, and underneath; "This squash, etc." Henceforth these women put no more confidence in labels, And perhaps when Tom gets over saying, "queer pumpkin pies," one of them will foel more kindly disposed towards the manufacturer whose squash is pumpkin if pumpkin will sell better. Krm.NNtiw, PA June Tho original package question is still an open one. Tho verdict yesterday in the S51- vermnn case shows that there must bo more law-making before the vexed matter is settled. The Silvcrman case went to the jury yesterday morning. Tho testimony disclosed tho fact that Silverman sold beer in Leechburg generally, and to men of intemperate habits.

Tho evidences aa to selling to minors was slight. Ou tho defense it was not denied that tho beer was sold, and it developed that the beer was shipped in a car with other beer consigned to a cold storage house in Pittsburg, and there part of tlie beer delivered to Silverman was transferred and reshipped from Allegheny to Leechburg, and that the remainder of the Silverman beer was sold by Mr. Wolf, a wholesale dealer, who seemed to have chnrgo of the cold storage house. I'olnts Sulmill led hy Hie Dd'cnsc. The defendant did not deny the sale of the beer generally, but denied that he sold to minors and men of intemperate habits knowingly, and set up as his defense the following in the form of points presented to the court: It being shown that the defendant, Charles Silvermnn, ill the sale of the beer charged in the indictment, was acting only as the agent under power of attorney for the Cincinnati Brewing company, of Hamilton, 0., a corporation duly incorporated under thg laws of tho state of Ohio, engaged in the manufacture in the state of Ohio and the sfilo of lager beer put up in kegs, barrels and half barrels, properly sealed and stamped with tho proper stamps, as required by tho law of the United States, and that said corporation consigned said beer to said Silverman in such original packages, nnd the same were sold by him as such agent jh the said original' packages and in no other way, there; can be No Cuiiviutlon In tlio Case that under the constitution and laws of the United States relating to commerce between the states, the Cincinnati Brewing company, of Hamilton, 0..

had a right and is fully protected in shipping their beer in original packages from tho state of Ohio into tho ate of Pennsylvania, and there disposing of the same in snch original packages, either by snle or otherwise, directly or by authorized agents, employed for purpose; that the mere fact of the beer being stopped in transit in Pittsburg, and transferred to another car, and then forwarded to Leechburg, tho place of its destination, did not change the character of the shipment, and did not afreet the rights of the Cincinnati Brewing company to have said beer sold by their agent at Leechburg, Armstrong county, Pa. There were other points presented in relation to the local prohibition law in relation to the town of Leechburg, and in asking the court to charge that in order to convict Silverman of soiling to minors and persons of known intemperate habits the commonwealth must show that he did so knowingly. The information made in the case recognized Silverman as the agent of the browing company, which was shown by the evidence offered by tho defense. Kaylnmi'ri (Hiurgo. Judge Rayburn refused the points in relation to tho local prohibitory law as to Leechburg, and afh'rmed those relating to the United States inter-state com- mercp law.

He left it as a question of fact for the jury to find whether or not the beer sold by Silverman in Leechburg was in the identical and original packages which had been shippedi'rom Hamilton, by the brewing company, stating it' they found they wore tho original packages then, under the recent United States original package decision, Silverman MS such agent of the brewing company, had a right to make such sale and could not bo convicted for violating tho Pennsylvania liquor law in selling without a license, In regard to selling to minors and persons of intemperate habits, he said that if tho jury found this was done then Silverman was guilty under tho clause of tho Pennsylvania law prohibiting tho sale to such persons, and should bo convicted, because, whilo the state might not prohibit tho Halo of liquor in original packages, it could protect its citizens in that respect, and tho minors and intemperate clause was nearly within tho police regulation of the state, and did not conflict with inter-state commerce, Tliu Jury's Yimllut. The jury wore out about hyo and a half hours, and re turned a verdict of not gxiilty of Helling without license, not guilty of soiling to minors, but guilty of selling to persons of known intemperate habits, This verdict, in tho language of Silver- nnd MAYSVILLE, June Tho wash- otit which cmtsett the fftilfoad accident on the Chesapeake afid Ohio, ill which throe trainmen were killed Thursday night, also caused tho death of about a dozen persons along Bull creek by drowning.
