Shamblin found the combination of religion and nutrition a natural match. She grew up in an interdenominational church.

So she found Bible verses, such as Colossians 2:16, which says, Therefore do not let anyone condemn you in matters of food and drink," and applied them to eating practices. Her group, began losing weight and keeping it off. Soon there were other groups and videos. News of the workshops spread by word of mouth as friends noticed friends losing weight. Now Shamblin has written a book, published earlier this month, called The Weigh Down Diet (Doubleday, $21).

Julie Still of Atlanta, who has a 9-month-old baby, says she has made a spiritual breakthrough following the diet. "I've just started reaching the turning point where I can leave it to Him, just in the last 24 or 48 hours," she says. After college, she gathered a group of church women to try to lose weight together on the same basis. To her disappointment, they soon gained back the weight they lost, and more. Still, there is one thing missing from The Mansion on the Hill: the music itself. Reading all these depressing tales of the molding of artists, it's a bit too easy to forget the real power of Springsteen's and other artists' songs. Are musicians aware that they're in a business where only the strong sellers survive? Of course.

Do they shape their sound and choose songs to be hits? You bet. But in Goodman's bleak world, this is all that goes on. As anyone who has walked out on stage in front of thousands of people can attest, there's more to it. Just because a song is listener- Of Exercisers enjoy their just desserts Among the many benefits of exercise, feeling less guilty about dessert is not to be underestimated. The ability to enjoy satisfying your sweet tooth might be motivation enough to stay with an exercise program, if disease prevention or weight control are less BOB CONDOR FEELING GOOD urgent goals.

"A lot of people work out regularly so they can eat a little more," says Barbara Day, a registered dietitian' and nutrition consultant to sports teams at the University of Louisville. "Usually that something extra includes dessert." But Day and other nutritionists do not allow carte bjanche or too many creme brulees at the athlete's dessert table. "I suggest that my clients choose desserts with some nutritional value," Day says, That doesn't eliminate treating yourself as much as factoring sweet3 into a total eating plan." Some examples: Carrot cake has a significant amount of beta carotene and vitamin you can trim some of the fat by eating less of the cream-cheese icing. Angel food cake is an excellent source of protein without much fat. Even Rice Krispies treats aren't horrible.

The enriched cereal has vitamins and minerals. In The High-Performance Cookbook (MacMillan General Reference, $15), Susan M. Kleiner and KarenRae Fried-man-Kester write, The words 'guilt' and 'deprivation' are not part of the high-performance vocabulary. But 'balance' is an important word. As long as you keep your fat intake low most of the time, you can splurge and occasionally enjoy a higher-fat food, and the total fat calories will balance out." Kleiner and Friedman-Kestet have developed several recipes that emphasize the nutrients in desserts without sacrificing the flavor.

A banana cream pie (high in potassium and calcium) uses skim milk in the filling and fat-free graham crackers for the crust. A peach cobbler has a whole-wheat crust. "Every food has a part in the diet," says Kleiner, a Seattle nutritionist. "Even some chocolate is OK." For people who consider chocolate bars staples, Day suggests buying bite-size candies and curbing hunger with fruit. People who are heavy soda drinkers can substitute sparkling waters mixed with fruit juice.

Of course, treating yourself to a can of soda is no different from allowing room for special desserts. "My advice is, make exceptions on special occasions or maybe pick one splurge dessert each week," Day says. "But still keep in mind that one serving of dessert at the restaurant might easily satisfy two sweet tooths." This column runs every other week, alternating with Nutrition Know-How. Shamblin applied the hungry-full principle to her own eating techniques, especially in the first 24 to 72 hours. Once past that acute irritation period, a gentle stretching of the groin and hip muscles can begin.

Paul Dutcher of the University of Rochester Medical Center, 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 25 Westmin By GAYLE WHITE COX NEWS SERVICE Gwen Shamblin, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 110 pounds, is munching on a peanut butter cup as she talks about her weight loss program. "Yesterday, while I was talking to Christian Woman magazine, I was able to sneak down chocolate cake," she brags from her Memphis, office. "It has Philadelphia cream cheese in it, and I don't buy light." Shamblin, 42, the mother of two and a dietitian educated at the University of Tennessee, is the founder of the Weigh Down Workshop, a church-based Bible study group aimed at helping people control their eating habits.

Nationwide, more than 9,000 churches in 60 denominations offer her 12-week program. With the enthusiasm of the cheerleader she once was, Shamblin talks about God and groceries. God made blue cheese, chocolate and ice cream for the enjoyment of human beings, she explains, but people often begin to focus on food more than on God. When people turn to the divinity the deity, not the confection to solve their spiritual and emotional problems, eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full, she says, they lose weight. Health checkup Groin strains By LISA ELLISON Whether you're training for an upcoming sports season or are simply a weekend warrior, you've got to worry about groin strains.

Groin injuries usually are caused by a pull or strain of the muscles of the inner thigh, also known as hip adductor muscles. You are at risk of a groin injury if you participate in a sport or activity that requires quick acceleration, deceleration or rapid directional changes. A strain is defined as an injury or impairment caused by overuse or overexertion. Once properly diagnosed, acute injuries often respond to rest, ice, compression wrap and elevation. sion on the Hill, which sets out to show that as rock became big business, most of the authenticity that made this once-rebellious form exciting was systematically bled out of it. It's not a difficult theory to prove. Goodman follows the careers of a number of artists through this book, including megastars like Neil Young and the Eagles and commercial washouts like MC5. But it is Bruce Springsteen's career a babe-among-the-sharks story that gets the most attention, from his unlikely entry into the rock star sweepstakes to his reshaping from Jersey loser to latter-century Woody Guthrie by artsefcentertamment manager Jon Landau. Landau, In turn, was shaped mightily by Hollywood wonder boy David Geffen, whose bloodthirsty rise is the central trail of the book.

Goodman draws lines from Geffen to Landau, and then from Landau to rock critic Dave Marsh, who starts praising Springsteen effusively just about the time his wife starts working with Landau. The book is an ongoing tracing of such connections, and its revelations say nothing good about rock criticism, the people who run the music business or the American way. It all gets terribly incestuous and depressing, but with more than 200 people interviewed and almost 30 pages of reference.
