Dredge Off For Midway Exports of Canned Goods From Showing Big Drop By FRANK KESTER Towed by 1 the United States Navy supply ship Vega, the big. dredge Sacramento, which played such an important part in the construction of Treasure Island, was towed out through the Golden Gate yesterday for Midway Island Whereat will perform another feat of transportation. The dredge will be used there to cut a channel through the surrounding coral reef and heads to permit the passage of cargo craft to the wharves so as to do away with unloading shipments for the air base by lighter.

The Sacramento is carrying a crew of nine men and it is expected that she will be between 25 and 30 days on the long haul to Midway, JAPAN TRADE DROPS cording to the report. OAKLAND TRAFFIC CLUB Exports of canned goods from Japan to the United States decreased sharply in 1938 compared with preceding year, a report to the Department of Commerce from its Tokyo office shows. Combined shipments of such products to the United States and Hawaii decreased from 1,054,639 cases, in 1937 to 542,736 cases in 1938. Decreases were also recorded in shipments to the Philippine Islands, Southeastern Asia and in South American and European markets, it was said. In contrast to these widespread decreases, exports to Great Britain, Japan's best market for' canned foods, reached 2,979,708, cases last year, an increase per cent compared with 1937.

Shipments to the do countries totaled 1,787,761 cases in 1938, an increase of 286 per cent over the preceding year, statistics show. The sharp advance in the trade with the British market, coupled with the increased shipments to yen-bloc countries, more than offset the decreased trade with other areas and caused Japan's total export trade in canned foods in 1938 to reach the record total of 7,157,219 cases. Of this total, marine products, the outstanding item in this trade, accounted for 4,699,222 cases, or approximately 65 per cent, ac- The Oakland, Traffic Club will stage its the entertainment to the visiting delegates of the Associated Traffic Clubs Convention, Monday night, when it holds forth with a reception and dinner at the Athens Club.
