STUDENT FLIERS LEARN ABOUT ENGINES AT OAKLAND SCHOOL Instruction Given at Airport Here to Pupils From 38 States, in Four Branches By JACK BURROUGHS The students at the school last year were from 38 States and seven foreign countries. The school is operating at capacity, with 250 students enrolled. The minimum age for enrollment is 18. Students in the various courses range" in age from 18 to 34, with 26 as the maximum enrollment age for pilot instruction.

VISUAL METHOD The visual education method is employed to a large extent at the school, with the students overhauling actual flying engines, trying them out on test stands or studying their operation by the use of V-line, radial and in line engines. mm nil I II I rwi rm 1 1 irr mm XMAS GIFTS WRAPPED FREE on purchases of $1.00 or more RIBBONS, BOXES, BOWS. STETSON HATS SWANK PERSONALIZED JEWELRY In one of the classrooms several problems had been chalked up on the blackboard by one of the instructors. One of these problems was: "Give all the important steps for timing a magneto to engine (name type of engine)." I can picture that instructor looking askance at the Icarus and remarking: "What? No magneto?" Another problem chalked on the board was: "Describe and illustrate the difference between a hot and cold spark plug." Even that one stumped me. 1 know, from experience, the difference between a hot stove lid and a cold one, but I would be hard put to it to describe and illustrate the a A "A MEN'S LEATHER JACKETS Aviator jackets best quality horsehide extra large map pocket. Striplings from one end of the country to the ether were nursing similar ambitions. The non-flying "flying machines" built by young America in those days, if strung out, nose to tail, would have reached from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Disappointment. My flying machine was made of half a dozen bamboo fishing poles, few yards of baling wire, the sail from an old ice boat and the remains of an older brother's discarded bicycle. It was a beautiful flying machine, in my somewhat prejudiced parental eyes. It had but one fault.

It refused, positively and unequivocally, to leave the ground I have wondered at odd moments since that time, why the Icarus, as I had optimistically christened my permanently grounded craft, would not fly. Today I found out I paid a visit to the Boeing School of Aeronautics at the Oakland Municipal Airport and learned why the Icarus never Justified the bottle of soda pop I broke over her nose 30 odd years ago. MAy REASONS I foand a new answer every time I turned around. Each of the answers was convincing in itself. Taken en masse, their weight was positively crushing.

As one of America's pioneer builders of non-flying aircraft I was interested in finding out why the ceiling was always down to ground level as far as my primitive plane was concerned. There were several thousand reasons. With K. H. Holmgren, editor of the Boeing School News, as my guide, I visited the construction and repair shop, radio room, engine shop, maintenance shop, communication shop, welding shop, sheet metal shop, classrooms and various other departments of the school, which is a division of United Airlines.

To try to tell the story of the Boeing School of Aeronautics in one article would be like trying to compress a college education into one study period. At this time I shall attempt only to touch upon a few highlights of the school and its various ramifications, leaving the details for later chapters, to appear from time to time. ENGINES EVERYWHERE While he was showing me through the engines shop, Holmgren slowly turned a propellar with bobbed blades to show me the action of a Pratt and Whitney four-cylinder Wasp engine, illustrating, through the movement of the master rod in the top cylinder, the four steps-intake, compression, power and exhaust. I saw engines everywhere. It seemed to me that there was enough horspower represented here to fly the whole hangar to the Moon and back. I found that SO different engines are used in engine instruction and that they range from 40 to 1100 horsepower.

The equipment includes 20 regular service engines. No wonder aviation has to be learned from the ground up!
