OAKLAND TRIBUNE, FEBRUARY 16, 1939 DIRECTORS OF OAKLAND RED CROSS CHAPTER NAMED Directors of the Oakland Chapter of the American Red Cross were elected last night for the new year during the annual meeting at the School Administration Building. Participating in the meeting were the branches from Hayward, San Leandro, Livermore, Pleasanton and Washington Township. H. Newbert, acting chairman, presided, and certificates of appreciation were presented by Joseph R. Knowland, vice-chairman.

Storien, Mrs. McLenegan, Dorothy Mrs. Rathburn, Maude Mrs. Mollie B. White and Miss Muriel Zahne.

Life saving certificates and medals for at least five years of service were awarded Dorothy Smith, Aileen Newell, Jack Knight and Sam Jackson. Certificates and medals for outstanding first aid work went to Dr. Alfred E. Bernstein and Mrs. Oline Bernstein.

Honorable mention was given the Nursing Service Committee, which has the largest enrollment of any Red Cross chapter in the country. There are 145 nurses in the first Maynard, Cannery (Executive, Expires Forrest J. Maynard, 41, of -1771 Florence Street, packing company executive, died suddenly yesterday in his San Francisco offices of a heart attack. Maynard was general sales representative tot the California Canning Peach Growers and a fruit broker. He complained of feeling ill after returning from a canning convention in the East.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Esther Maynard, and two daughters, Donna Lou and Marna Ann, as well as a brother and a sister. He was born in Burlingame, and educated there, coming to California 10 years ago. Former Head Mint Dies J. Clement Bates, 68, Succumbs at Home rant After Long Illness ALAMEDA, Feb.

Clement Bates, 68, former State Senator and assistant superintendent of the United States Mint in San Francisco, died last night at his home, 2139 Buena Vista Avenue, after a long illness. Bates, long prominent in affairs of the Native Sons of the Golden West, Has been ill since he collapsed in his office at the mint last July, He had been connected with the mint since his appointment as cashier in 1908. Before that he was a lumber dealer in Alameda for many years and served as assemblyman from 1902 to 1906, and as State senator from 1906 to 1908. did not complete his term as senator because of his appointment the mint position. Active in the Native Sons, Knights Templar and the Mystic Shrine, Bates was a charter member of Halcyon Parlor No.

146 of the Native Sons, and has represented it in the Grand Parlor almost every year for the past 40 years. He was for many years chairman of the finance committee of the Grand Parlor. Herbert S. Wise, Elmer P. Zollner, Fireman's Pension Request Denied ALAMEDA, Feb. 16. An application by Ralph Walton, 45, Alameda City Fireman, to be retired on halfpay on account of disability, was denied by the City Pension Board yesterday.

The board advised Walton of its action after hearing the testimony of three physicians who expressed the opinion that his disability caused by heart disease, was not incurred because of. his service with the city. The board is composed of Mayor Henry A. Weichhart, City Manager Charles R. Schwanenberg and Treasurer Homer Dallas.

Reports will then be presented by President Bender, J. L. Moore, national director: C. R. Drank and Ralph Hagin, field secretaries; L.

H. Shapiro, legal counsel; R. N. Ricketts, auditing committee; Al Dingle, chapter committee; John' Heulin, procedure; and Park Hyde, collective activity. NOONDAY LUNCHEON Frank Westfall will be toastmaster at the noonday luncheon at the Hotel Oakland, and Ralph T.

Fisher, vice-president of the American Trust Company, will speak on 'Credit Unions and Their Relation to Industry." Miss Cecil Mosbacher, deputy district attorney of Alameda County, will speak at the afternoon session on "Usury." The afternoon session will close with the election of officers and directors. HENRY JORDAN OHIO RITES SET Funeral services will be held Saturday in 1 Ohio for William Henry Jordan, 89, former speaker of the California State Assembly and a San Francisco attorney for 40 years, who died suddenly in Cincinnati Tuesday. Jordan came to California in 1859 with his brother, Frank Jordan, now secretary of State here.

He was educated at the Brayton in Oakland and at Eastern colleges. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1885 and served as a member of the Oakland Board of Education from 1881 to 1885. Elected to the Assembly In 1884 and reelected in 1886, he was named speaker in 1887. While speaker, he championed a bill for permanent aid for the University of California, of which he was a regent. He is survived by his widow, Mrs.
